Step back into a time of outrageous movie-theater gimmicks and larger-than-
life B-screen stars in this charming homage to the great sci-fi and horror
flicks of the 1950's and 60's
Watch as the uproarious William Castle-inspired movie producer, Lawrence
Woolsey, brings his unique brand of flashy showmanship to the unsuspecting
residents of Key West, Florida.
It's 1962 and 15-year-old fan Gene Loomis can't wait for the arrival of Wool-
sey, who is in town to promote his latest offering of atomic power gone
berserk, "MANT!" But the absurd vision of Woolsey's tale takes on a sudden
urgency as the Cuban Missile Crisis places the real threat of atomic horror
just 90 miles off the coast.
With the help of Gene and Woolsey's leading lady, Ruth, the master showman
gives Key West a premier they'll never forget.
Anything can happen in the movies, and everything does in this hilarious tri-
bute to a more innocent (and outrageous) time in American cinema!

Mutterings from my Blog post:
I've been meaning to share this great little film with y'all for several
years, now, but things and stuff kept getting in the way, other posts taking
priority; my sad excuse for a memory forgetting all about it; venues being
snatched out from under me; sickness, etc., etc., ad nausium... But here it
finally is, and you'll benefit from the delay because it has afforded me the
opportunity to acquire a variety of versions to share with you :)
I have no less than four different releases of the film, encompassing two
Blu-rays, and three DVD's. The reason for the purchase of the second DVD was
purely for the cover, but the two BR's are different in their inclusion of
extras and printed materials, and of course they each have a different cover
(Zaphod and his cover fetish... :-P )
The movie itself could certainly be classed as 'Little-Known,' as no one I've
ever mentioned it to recalls hearing of it before, and after looking it up on
WikiPedia just now, I see that it grossed less than $10 Million during its
theatrical run...
Nevertheless, it's a film that I thoroughly enjoy. As near as I can ascer-
tain, I first stumbled upon it sometime in 2009 (the first viewing I have
recorded is 2009-11-04) and have watched it at least ten times since then
(and fully intend at least that many more viewings before I croak). It's got
a little bit of everything; Comedy; drama; a look back on the hype and
schlock of the 1950's-60's Sci-Fi and Horror genre; numerous references and
homages to famous (and infamous) actors, directors and studios throughout the
film (Check the IMDb trivia section for clues to some of them); some slight
thought-provoking social commentary on war and violence; but most of all (to
us, anyway) it has Cuties!
Oh my gosh, what an altogether, completely edible little man is Jesse Lee
Soffer, who plays 'Dennis Loomis.' That sandy/strawberry blond hair and
those freckles have me melting into a puddle every time I watch it
screentime, but he commands the screen while he's on it. Dennis' big bro-
ther, Gene, and friend, Stan are no slouches in the cute department, but it's
the little guys that really make the movie for me. And there are TONS of
front for some beautiful little uncredited faces :)
Also, keep your eyes peeled for another (former) Cutie, Luke Halpin (of
"Man in Crowd."
If you've never seen the film before, please, take this opportunity to grab
This is the Shout! Factory BD50, bought because at the time I could not play
the Arrow release on my computer, and so was unaware that it contained the
same set of Extras that this release did (but I was also greatly inticed to
buy this one because of the slipcover and the different cover art... :-P ).
This BRD features a lovely transfer and restoration, giving us rich detail in
colors, velvety blacks, and nice sunlit outdoor scenes. I think there's just
the right amount of grain added to keep the look of the original film, yet
still retain the high amount of detail that we look for in a Blu-ray.
There's even smooth transitions between the B&W "MANT!" film on the theater
screen and the live-action.
And as a bonus, I am also posting HQ scans of the 20-page booklet that was
included with the Arrow Blu-Ray release. It has some juicy tidbits about the
film and the production, plus some nice pictures :) [Z0107529B5BS.rar]
I am posting a total of three different versions of the film, two DVD's and a
full BD50. I see that our friend Opie Taylor has already posted the 2010
Universal DVD release, so that will save me some time and bandwith - Thank
You, Sir! :)
