Robert and Sheila Beckwith are apparently the 'perfect' couple - Happily marr-
ied for years, he a college English professor, her the chief editor of the
Harvard University Press, the couple have two daughters, Jessica and Paula,
and all seems ideal in their lives, until one day Robert receives a call from
old friend Louis Monquerge in France, informing him that Nicole Guerin was
killed in an accident a few days prior.
It seems that about ten years ago, while Robert was in France on a lecture
tour, he was injured in a car wreck, and Nicole was the doctor that treated
him. The two became close and a three-day affair ensued. Robert returned to
the United States and continued with his life as usual, never telling Sheila
about the incident. Now, however, Louis informs him that as a result of his
brief affair with Nicole, a child was produced, Jean-Claude, who is now an
orphan after his mother's death.
Once Robert confesses everything to Sheila, their idyllic family life is
turned upside down, and relations between the two are severely strained. In
an effort to keep Robert from traveling to France to see Jean-Claude, Sheila
suggests that the boy come to the U.S. and stay with them over the Easter hol-
iday. Once the boy arrives, Sheila, grows increasingly insecure as she deals
with her husband's infidelity as well as the offspring resulting from it.
