Mickey Rooney first achieved stardom in a series of films based on the
Toonerville Trolley comic strip character, Mickey McGuire, that ran from 1927
to 1934. The only serious rival to Hal Roach's 'Our Gang' series, these short
comedies have rarely been seen since their initial release and are some of the
best in the series.
This compilation DVD contains two episodes from Mickey Rooney's "Mickey
McGuire" series, one Big Boy episode from 1927, and one lone short subject.

Mickey Rooney is one of a small handful of former child actors that I have a
problem 'warming up to.' The reason is, I've become so used to seeing him as
an adult for most of my life, and only relatively recently 'discovered' his
childhood roles.
Don't get me wrong - He was cute as a button as a youth, and did an outstand-
ing job of acting in almost every role I've seen him in (some, including me,
might even go as far as to say that some of his earlier acting was better than
the later stuff, but we won't get into that right now...) - It's just that I
have a hard time consistently seeing him as a "Cutie," instead seeing traces
and features of his adult (and _OLDER_ adult at that!) self, and it just kinda
ruins the experience for me...
Hopefully you don't have the same mental hangups as I, and will be able to
fully enjoy the Cutie that is Mickey Rooney :)
A note to those who might be offended by racial stereotyping: Remember the era
these short films were produced in - They feature some very UN-PC situations
and dialogue, so be forewarned...
TRIVIA: 7-year-old Joe Yule had his name legally changed by the studio to
Mickey McGuire, to avoid paying royalties to the creators of the famed
Toonerville Folks comic strip, on which Mickey was based. From the silents
into the sound era, Mickey McGuire starred in 78 comedies, starting in 1927
with "Mickey's Circus," and continuing to 1936. Prevented by a studio lawsuit
from using the name Mickey McGuire when he graduated to other projects, he
took on the name Mickey Rooney, and a legendary Hollywood star was born.
Mickey's 'Ape-Man' episode was pretty standard fare, but it did have one
redeeming feature. Call me old-fashioned, but I just can't say no to a Cutie
in Leopard-Skin...
And "Big Boy" has the most Darling / Adorable / Precious / <insert your own
euphemism here> little face!
A note about the last one, "Howling Hollywood": There are some seriously funny
intertitles in this short feature! I was all ready to write this one off as
not OT, but there is an uncredited freckle-faced little Cutie in here that
makes an appearance in about three scenes :)
