Recently moved to a crumbling tower block of flats, Roland's cleverness marks
him out for rough treatment from the gang who haunt the stairwells. Fleeing
from Ripper, the gang leader, he plummets to earth in a lift that should be
broken... waking up, he finds himself in the grotesque and eerie fantasy world
of The Castle — a twisted version of the tower block, filled with grue-
some versions of the people he knows. Can Roland find the missing keys he
needs to become King of the Castle?
Macabre, fantastical and a benchmark production for children's television in
the 1970's, King of the Castle was created by Doctor Who stalwarts Bob Baker
and Dave Martin as one of the run of outstanding children's dramas HTV pro-
duced in that decade. Featuring strong direction and a script which expertly
melds fantasy and reality, the series boasts solid performances from genre
stalwarts Fulton Mackay, Milton Johns and Talfryn Thomas as well as Philip
DaCosta as the series' hero, Roland.

Here we have a 7-episode series from 1977 Merrie Olde England. With adequate
production values and an interesting storyline, the series looks to be enter-
taining. It revolves around young Roland Wright, a chorister newly moved into
a block of flats where a gang of roughs inhabit the stairwells, waiting to
roust any unsuspecting victims.
As fate would have it, Roland becomes a prime target every time he ventures
out of the apartment. During one of these encounters, the boy stumbles onto
the building's elevator --which was supposedly out of order-- and plummets
downward into... well, let's just say he isn't in Kansas (or Sussex, as the
case may be) anymore!
The characters he meets in this strange new world are twisted, distorted
versions of the folks in the normal world, and Roland spends the next six
episodes trying to figure out what's going on and just how to find his way
back home.
If the series feels reminiscent of "Doctor Who," that's because a couple of
the folks associated with the good Time Lord also worked on this production :)
