A little boy found wandering the streets is taken in by Bob and Joan, a kindly
couple. The boy is cold, wet and desperate for shelter, but Bob and Joan are
perplexed by his claims that he was once a rat. Meanwhile, rumors are rife at
the newspaper about the prince's new love: a girl who captivated everyone at
the palace ball...
Sound familiar?
Everyone knows the story of Cinderella - how the Fairy Godmother turned a
scullery maid into a princess, the kitchen rats into footmen and pages and
sent them off to the palace ball. But few know that during the Ball one of
those pageboys ran off to play and when the clock struck Midnight and
Cinderella fled for home, the pageboy was left behind and stayed as he was - a
little boy with only a dim memory of his former life... as a rat!
From the kaBOOM! DVD Cover:
"I Was a Rat!" So insists a scruffy boy named Roger. Maybe it's
true. But what is he now?
A terrifying monster running wild in the sewers?

A championship wriggler and a budding thief?
That's the hope of Billy and his gang.
A victim of "Rodent Delusion"?
So says the hospital doctor.
Or, just an ordinary small boy, though a little ratty in his
habits?
Only three people believe this version of the story.
convince the rest of the world!
Get enchanted with this twist on the classic Cinderella story - A
magical weaving of humor, fairy tale and adventure.

I had this item on my "Wanted" List from at least August of 2009, having read
the IMDb synopsis and seeing a small DVD front cover. Well, out of the blue
one day, our friend Czuly emailed me, asking about it, and including an Amazon
link to the DVD. I had no idea there had ever *been* a DVD release of it, it
being a British Made-for-Telly production, but there it was! Czuly very
graciously offered to go in halfers with me on the DVD purchase, so we present
this Oh-So-Cute little Ginger Rat-Boy for your enjoyment :)
I originally took 791 screenshots, when I posted this film to The Wild Boys,
Seriously, though, I don't think it would be possible to have too many shots
of Calum Worthy - His face just lights up the screen whenever the camera's on
him, and I could gaze at him for hours :)
The film moved along at a pretty fair pace, only having a couple of spots
where it seemed to drag - I believe the production was originally aired on TV
in multiple parts, so that might account for it, too. The scenes with Prince
Richard and Lady Aurelia Ashington / Mary Jane Potts were particularly onerous
to me.
I found it quite odd that they chose to cast American actor Ned Beatty as
Mudduck, the editor of the newspaper The Daily Scourge - His fake British
accent was quite evident (and annoying at times) - Surely they could've found
someone more suitable...
All in all, though, adequate production values, a new and charming twist on
the old Cinderella tale, and the cutest little Rat-Boy you ever did see all
combine to make "I Was a Rat" a most enjoyable 102 minutes of wholesome
entertainment :)
