In 1943, a childless Jewish couple maneuvers around the law and, with the help
of a lot of money, adopts a gentile boy from an orphanage in the Hungarian
countryside.
Germany's eventual defeat in the East is in the air; but so, too, is the
ominous feeling that hungry Jews, spared annihilation up to this point, are
approaching the climax of their existence in Hungary.

Their intention isn't to convert the unruly and rebellious child to Judaism,
but to pass on to him the knowledge, customs and compassion of their culture
and religion. In this way, they and their traditions, doomed to certain
extinction in the near future, will continue to live on.
When the Jews of the countryside are eventually rounded up for deportation to
Auschwitz-Birkenau, the couple leave behind their assets to the Hungarian
workers on their farm with the assurance that they'll look after the boy
until he's grown up.
