7-Year-Old Gus Morton has been an uncle all his life. But when his quarrel-
some, unmanageable 7-year-old nephew, Tom comes to spend the summer holidays
with him, he finds the responsibilities of his position almost too hard to
bear...
Made fun of by the other children because he's an uncle at age 7, Gus begins
to retreat into his own little world, spending more and more time alone in a
large abandoned house with just a book, a candle, a phonograph, and his newly-
bought pet budgie whom he feebly attempts to learn to say "Bloody Damn!" Gus
becomes meditative, worrying about all sorts of weighty worldly matters, many
quite above his age range, such as procreation and mortality.
We see him being quite affected after witnessing the castration of some bulls
Gus and his nephew, Tom are at odds through most of the movie, but a friend-
ship of mutual advantage develops in the end, and the film ends on a cheery
note :)
Zaphod Curiously Calls to Attention: IMDb lists this film as being first
released in the UK in 1965, but the back of the DVD cover states, "Original
theatrical exhibition December, 1964."

From Zaphod's original comments:
...a film I had never heard of before now, "The Uncle" (1965-NR). It's an
introspective film that looks in on little 7-year-old Gus Morton (Robert
over the course of one school holiday.
Also featured in the cast is a dashing young man named John Moulder-Brown,
whom you may have seen in several other well-known films such as "Heidi"
(1968-TV) and "The Boys of Paul Street" (1969-NR), as well as other CFF block-
busters like "Go Kart Go", "Beware of the Dog", and "Operation Third Form,"
just to mention a few.
Believe it or not, I actually watched this movie the same day I downloaded it
(*shock*), and can highly recommend it. The depth of emotion and facial
expressions from young Master Duncan totally made the film, and it's one that
I'm sure I'll return to and enjoy a few more times before I croak :)
