18-year-old Arthur Beniker is the clandestine author who writes the "Dear Lola"
advice column, read by millions weekly in over 400 newspapers nationwide. But
he's also the eldest of five orphans currently living in the Esther Watson
Memorial Hall - Home for Orphaned and Abandoned Children. There's Ben,
the youngest, who eats paper; introvert James; Cassie, the only girl; and
Edmond. These five have banded together and made a sacred pact to be a 'real'
family - no matter what, forever and always. Edmond has just successfully
avoided being adopted by stripping, climbing on a chair and howling like a
wolf during his interview with his prospective adoptive parents, but the
threat of separation looms larger each day. When he learns that young Ben
is facing impending adoption also, Arthur assembles the ragtag "Family," and
they escape from the orphanage to start life anew. Before long, though,
Arthur's dream of freedom becomes a comic nightmare, as he tries to parent
children not much younger than himself - while struggling to keep their
secret from the prying locals of the small town in which they've settled.
Finally Child Welfare is notified and Arthur finds himself in the middle of
a court battle to keep his little family together...
