Those are only fragments, though, sort of randomly downloaded from
various places over the years. I never had copies of the CD distros of
those collections, unfortunately.

Nah, not really an art. Sometimes I just stash things away on a closet
shelf ... or, as I said the other day, in a dresser drawer ... and then
forget about 'em for a buncha years. :-0
But making occasional backups helps, and that's not nearly as painful
as it used to be in the bad old days. Forget about optical; that's way
too slow and low-capacity now. Try one of these gizmos instead:
