releasenotes
Double CD re-issue of both Dozer full-length albums that were originally
released on Man's Ruin Records. Four previously unreleased bonus tracks
recorded during the same time-period as these two classic Dozer albums! This
release celebrates Dozer's 15 year anniversary as a band!
-- In The Tail Of A Comet --
The stoner rock phenomenon that took off in the 1990s wasn't limited to one
country. The U.S. and England gave us a lot of bands, and Scandinavia has also
provided its share of stoner rockers. In Scandinavian countries, it is
generally assumed that an outfit will sing and write in English, which is
exactly what Swedish band Dozer does on In the Tail of a Comet. Like many
stoner units, Dozer is heavily influenced by Black Sabbath -- the influence of
Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi is especially strong on "Captain Spaceheart,"
"Inside the Falcon," and "Grand Dragon." But the vocals aren't very
Osbourne-like, and the faster songs tend to be less Sabbath-minded than the
slower ones. When the tempos are increased they bring to mind early Metallica
more than anything. But whatever the tempo, the electric guitars are
consistently fuzzy, which is one of stoner rock's trademarks. In the Tail of a
Comet falls short of exceptional, but it's a satisfying effort that has more
plusses than minuses.
-- Madre De Dios --
Dozer showed some promise on its first Man's Ruin album, In the Tail of a
Comet, an enjoyable, if less than exceptional, stoner rock effort that
underscored the Swedish band's appreciation of Black Sabbath and early
Metallica. Madre de Dios, Dozer's second Man's Ruin effort, isn't a radical
departure from its predecessor. The headbangers' focus is still stoner rock,
and Sabbath and Metallica are still prominent influences. But this time, the
writing is slightly stronger. While In the Tail of a Comet was respectable,
Madre de Dios is even more confident and assured. This CD doesn't try to win
you over with aggression alone; although the songs are loud, heavy, and
forceful -- no one will mistake Madre de Dios for easy listening -- they're
also melodic. Like Sabbath, Dozer holds melody and heaviness in equally high
regard. The title of this album is certainly an attention-getter; in Spanish,
Madre de Dios means Mother of God. So here you have a Swedish band that writes
in English exclusively (which isn't uncommon in Scandinavian countries) but
gives its second Man's Ruin album a Spanish title. Of course, the main thing
is the quality of the songs themselves -- and on Madre de Dios, a band that
was decent to begin with is getting even better.
