Not defending him but very early on, early Krock days 1985-6, he had
an on air discussion how when the went on vacation, people would tell
him how they would tune in & listen for a long periods of time not
realizing it was a re-run. And he concluded if people can't
immediately tell the difference, why announce it and jeopardize the
ratings?
So it stuck and probably became SOP.
When his kids were young, he would follow the LI School vacation
schedule to a T.
Obviously much has changed but perhaps this is how it started.
