When Stern went to WNBC I started listening to the Greaseman on DC101. After
high school I stopped getting up early enough to listen to any morning radio
then for 4 years I had a job that started at 6am before any morning show
started. After I left that job I started listening to the entire WJFK line-up
(Howard, Liddy then O&A, Don&Mike, Greaseman then Ron&Fez, Loveline
w/Carolla) whenever possible. When Howard did the New Year's Rotten Eve
pay-per-view (93/94), I drove up to New Jersey to watch it at a friend's NYE
party. I was driving to Boston sitting in traffic before the GW Bridge during
the Cleveland funeral. Gary's Love Tape and the Stuttering John/Cabbie fight
were part of my morning commute. On 9/11 I saw the first two planes hit on
the Today show, then I listened to Stern on my way to my soon-to-be-cancelled
training class (I broke the news to the other people in the class, my
dickhead Scottish trainer tried to equate the attacks with IRA bombings in
the UK). 2003 was a lost year because I moved to a city where Stern was on a
shitty AM station that I could only tune in on a sunny day, while standing on
one leg, with a finger in my nose. After moving back to D.C. I was again
listening to WJFK constantly.
2006 was a breakthrough year. I got an iPod, Stern moved to satellite (even
though I pay for Sirius in my car I always download the shows, I can count my
live listens on Sirius on two hands), and WJFK (stupidly) made podcasts of
their remaining shows commercial-free. Without commercials I could suddenly
listen to every minute of every show on my own schedule.
I haven't missed a minute of Stern's Sirius shows. But I don't archive 'em, I
delete them immediately. When he shortened the Sirius shows by an hour and
moved to three days a week that was actually good for me as that gave me 9
free hours a week to listen to other shows.
