And yet, with all this government involvement the rail system still runs like
crap.

In the USA, FedEx and UPS operate far more efficiently then our US postal
service which is on the verge of insolvency. We have an outstanding armed
forces, which is the governments main responsibility. Unfortunately, our armed
forces are a source of tremendous waste and financial inefficiency. I am just
not sure how one can truly privatize the military of a nation state.
As for government health care, Canada, which has socialized medicine, delivers
such poor service that we have many thousands of Canadians crossing into the USA
every year seeking immediate help which they are unable to obtain under the
government system.
Even prisons in the USA are being privatized and the results have been
outstanding with tremendous cost savings.
Socialists delude themselves into believing government run programs are great,
but the truth of the matter is, they are bankrupting their countries and remove
incentive for individual achievement. I suppose none of that matters as long as
you have no problem taking and spending other people's money and indenture your
children and grandchildren to pay the debts you incur.
The next world war might well find France having to get themselves out of
trouble and we shall see just how well their social welfare programs contribute
to the common defense.
