Why no recent posts to <alt.binaries.e-book.technical>?
Well, here used to be thousands posted every month to this group but several months ago (maybe a year?) one or two very prolific posters were sued under DCMA for distributing copyrighted materials and they stopped posting in response to a Cease and Desist order. They were the 90% contributors and I never did learn the original source of their files, but they posted a *lot*.
You will see many of those books still appear on BinSearch, but they are rapidly disappearing due to aging server retention. If you note the age of the post you will see these posts are a year ago or longer. My advise: get as many as you can, while you can. They will be gone forever eventually unless (brazenly) reposted.
The best way (IMHO) is to get a copy of NewsBin (or a similar bulk downloader) and download ALL headers for <alt.binaries.e-book.technical> and then peruse using filters and search on your local copy of the headers (much faster and more efficient that via BinSearch/Usenet). Get a huge storage drive and another for backup and a fast internet connection.
I'm sorry to say that the widely publicized legal wrangling killed this group. I for one really miss all the interesting material that I found there by chance and never would have purchased anyway. I'm not defending piracy, I'm just saying...
It's only a matter of time before posters on other groups are similarly sued for posting (c) materials, including the other eBook groups. I for one grab what I can even if I don't have an immediate interest in the particular title. Never know when the other groups will go dark like <alt.binaries.e-book.technical> did. Don't feel the need to post (c) material--it may end up costing you a lot. If you post one or two books they will probably ignore you, but the chill factor is what the plaintiff's were counting on, and in this group at least, it worked.
Same thing happened to <alt.binaries.educational> and <alt.binaries.cbt>. Glad I've been around long enough on Usenet to have grabbed what I could.
Just my $0.02 but I hope it helps explain why this group is dead.
