The "Deck of Many Things" is a magical artifact introduced in the
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st Edition Dungeon Master's Guide, and it
is an item that is both fiendish and clever. A magical deck of cards,
each card bestows some sort of blessing or curse on the person who
draws the card... but the recipient is never sure which he is going to
get. Results of the draw could range from the good (receiving castles,
gold and magic items), to bad (having your soul sucked out of your
body, being imprisoned in a magical maze, to facing off in a
one-on-one battle with Death himself) but - one way or another - a
draw from a "Deck of Many Things" was sure to the fate of any
player-character, and possibly an entire campaign. It is no wonder the
magical item became both popular and infamous, and it has been in
every version of Dungeons & Dragons since.
In 1989, TSR included a "Deck of Many Things" in Dragon Magazine #148.
Printed on four pages of glossy card-stock, players had to cut out the
cards themselves but once they did, they had a beautiful 22-card deck
ready to spring on their players. My personal set saw a lot of use,
but over the years those 22 cards dropped down to 12 as cards got
ripped or lost. Not wanting to be without such a valuable artifact, I
decided it was time to get myself a new deck.
This is not a new scan. Rather, I have taken the pages from the PDF of
Dragon Magazine #148 and cleaned them up. I got rid of a lot of the
JPG artifacting, cleaned away the dirt, straightened the images,
shuffled some pages and better aligned the fronts to the backs. These
are now suitable for printing. Do a double-sided print onto some
8.5"x11" card-stock and its almost like you have the originals.
"Pick a card, any card!"
