There are several options:
1. Maybe the first thing you should do is determine whether your
present burner can possibly handle dual layer blanks. It wouldn't have
to be that new. You could run a test routine with a program like
Imgburn or Nero to check (you may need a DL (dvd9) blank to run the
test). If it cant handle them, new burners are not that expensive --
probably can be found for $30 or less. It's good to have an extra dvd
burner anyway for various reasons.
2. Split the disk into 2 dvd5's with the appropriate software and burn
them separately.
3. Remove unwanted material to equal or get close to a dvd5 and shrink
what's left if necessary.
This is not usually easy with the better Criterion disks since unlike
other commercial disks there is rarely a lot of extraneous material
like extra language dubs, promotional trailers, etc that I don't mind
losing.
What I will sometimes do with my personal backups of Criterion
dvd9's if I don't burn them as dvd9's or shrink the whole disk is to
split them so that the movie is on disk 1 and the extras are on disk
2. And I may have to compress the movie a little bit --but not as
much as if I had to compress the extras also. The extras may not fill
the second disk, so I'll often add as much of the end of the movie on
the second disk to fill the disk. (I'll still have the whole movie on
disk 1)
4. Shrink using a quality program like DVDRebuilder.
