Doctor Mabuse is a fictional character created by Norbert Jacques, made famous by the three films
Austrian director Fritz Lang made about him over a period of almost 40 years. Although the character
was designed to deliberately mimic pulp-style villains in the mold of Dr. Fu Manchu and Fantomas,
the latter of which was a direct inspiration, Jacques' aim was both to capture the commercial
success of such pulp tales and to make political comment on the establishment of the day, in much
the same way that the silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) had done just a few years
previously.

The two-part film mirrors German society of the 1920s in all its criminal-ridden decadence. Its
sinister theme is domination by terror. The power-crazed Mabuse masterminds the world's most
dangerous gang of counterfeiters, thieves, and murderers, wielding hypnotic powers with an iron fist
to obtain total obedience to his will. The perfect choice for DVD collectors and with a stunning
array of special features. Dr Mabuse -- the Gambler has to be seen to be believed.

A nightmare vision of a modern world gone mad, of the effect of terror on society, a final tribute
to the Expressionistic German cinema, an early example of the unique effect of film sound, and a
powerful detective thriller, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse remains one of Fritz Lang's most complex
films. Restored now to its original visual and aural power, it should be enjoyed and studied, both
for what it teaches us about the expressive nature of cinema -- and the terrors of modern life.

Set in 1960, the film begins with a series of unsolved murders in a Berlin hotel. The modus operandi
of the murderer is the same as that of long-dead megalomaniac Dr. Mabuse. Police detective Gert
Frobe and amateur sleuths Peter Van Eyck and Dawn Addams suspect that the killer is a man who
believes that he is the reincarnation of Mabuse. Could the culprit be secretive insurance salesman
Werner Peters, or blind seer Wolfgang Preiss? The title refers to the hotel's sophisticated TV
surveillance system--dozens of roving cameras and TV monitors, inspired (claimed Lang) by a
sophisticated bugging method used by the Nazis during World War II.
