Hi, Ribble:
It seems but a few months ago that I was plodding along with a1.5mbps down/256kbps up connection... But it was actually about 3 or 4 years ago.
Before that, the fastest available connection to replace 56k modem/dialup was 256/64 - around 10 or 11 years ago
Australia was suffering under the Telstra/Bigpond monopoly; they owned all of the copper phone lines and they determined what technology was to be made available to the paying customers. When providers in the US of A were making fast ADSL available to their customers, we were privileged to have basic ADSL [1.5/256] available as the top offering. If we didn't want to pay extortionate rates for that, we could stick with the 256/64 or go for the middle-of-the-road package of 512/128. If we were to exceed the ISP's ridiculously low data transfer limit, we would be charged excess usage fees, and that could mount up to a frightening bill at the end of the month. It was enough to blister paint and persuade ugly dogs to bark at the post-men
We had all of this while the US providers were offering 25mbps down and 8mbps up with no date cap!
[end of rant]
