Australians were to get fibre-optic@100mbps down/40mbps up under a scheme introduced several years ago by a previous government. However, there was a change of government and the new [mentally retarded] government decided to change the "fibre-to-the-premises" [FTTP] plan to a "fibre-to-the-node" [FTTN]scheme, where there is fibre-optic to several pillars around all of the suburbs, and the old copper wire from the pillars to the premises.
The copper wire that we had from the telephone exchange to the premises was capable if giving subscribers 24mbps down and 8mbps up using ADSL technology. At a cost of many billions of dollars, our new FTTN now gives us 25 down and 5 up.
The FTTN scheme has been dubbed "multi-technology-mix" [MTM] by the innovators who dreamed it up. I prefer to call it "Malcolm Turnbull's Madness", Turnbull being the mental giant who gave it to us.
Despite the plans made by a previous government several years ago, Australia remains in the dark ages where internet is concerned, and it looks like staying that way for a few more decades.
In my location, the internet consumer has been very poorly served. The telephone exchange never got the 24/8 ADSL technology; we were stuck with 8/1 ADSL, and the best down speed that I have ever seen on it was about 6mbps - when the wind was blowing in the right direction... The usual top speed was 3-4 mbps :-(
I close my eyes and shake my head in wonder over the gullibility of the Australian voters who elected our current crop of cretins into parliament.
