It does NOT fill the VLC screen using "default" AR upon replay but replays fine & looks fine on my PC.
Pausing replay & changing AR to "5:3" fills the screen & FWIW I see no distortion. Your choice.
I've also burned a few Parts to DVD and they also show some blank screen but look & replay fine.

These files come from You-Tube where AR is often downsized I suspect. Still, plays fine for me.
