I hope that this reply goes into the correct slot this time! I haven't
been having a lot of luck with it lately...
Hope that you and the wife had a great time in town. Sounds like you
did, anyway. Love the (obviously) old telescope at the observatory. All
brass with the iron railing at the top. What really got me was the
Cutty Sark. I had no clue that it still existed. Is that the real thing
or a remake? Years ago, the makers of Cutty Sark scotch printed a
commercial that told the story of how a spinaker got it's name. Sort of
neat, but it stuck in my mind. When I was in the Navy, I was on an
aircraft carrier, which is like a floating city, and we had a hobby
shop. I actually bought a plastic model of the Cutty Sark which was
about 2 1/2 feet long or so. Never finished it though...it was
interrupted by the fire. The ship as well as the story have stuck in my
mind ever since though. It's a beautiful ship...as most tall ships are.
Actually, a wife and two kids seems like a pretty good trade to me, eh?
Happiness is all in how you look at it.
Thank You for the 'Barging Round Britain' episodes.
And, by the way: You said that people 'villified' him for calling them
a 'barge'. Actually I think maybe he just used the phrase as a play on
words with the name - 'Barging Round Britain'. Maybe?
Again, Thanks!
Later...
PeggLeg

Hiya Peggleg. Yes - everyone knew what he meant and it is a great play on words
but you know what us British can be like - It's a bit like mistaking a
Lancashire man for a Yorkshire man - War of the roses and all that. (Romeo and
Juliet.) Or a "Black country" man for a "Brummy" (someone who mistakes the
former for someone who hails from Birmingham) Wars have started over here for
less haha!
Yes! - It's the real Cutty Sark. There was a BIG fire while they were restoring
it but they managed to salvage a very large part of it. It was the fastest ship
of the day and IMHO is still the most beautiful ship that's ever been built.
More "Barging" on the way.
RIB.
