Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales:
This DVD covers English author, poet, philosopher, courtier, and diplomat Geoffrey Chaucer's life to middle age, Chaucer's 14th century saw him survive the Black Death as a child, the plague that wiped out a third of the population of the West, and become actively involved, both as a soldier and later a secret agent in the 100 Years War, the war that was to leave England devastated. Despite all these man-made and natural catastrophes, English literature went though a short Renaissance, and the program hints as to why this might have happened, and considers the leading role that Chaucer was to play in it. I've watched these three discs several times and will use them as a teaching tool to introduce students to the 3 major trends in 18th & 19th Century English poetry and to specific poets of each moevment. Each discs provides a great introduction to a major movement in English poetry: Augustan, Romantic & Victorian, then focuses on 3-5 of the major poets of that movement. Augustan poets: Dryden, Pope & Dr. Johnson. Romantic poets: Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Byron & Shelley. Victorian poets: Tennyson, Robert Browning, Matthew Arnold & Gerard Manly Hopkins. Highly recommended as a learning and teaching tool!
