naaah, it's all good.
Average around here is maybe 68+.
Surveys have been done but we lost a few old codgers (+80)
a while back.. bugger!
Ever heard of U3A??
I did a stint there, teaching, before I moved into Advocacy
not long (2years or so) before I retired.
http://u3a.org.au/
All good fun that but they got no equipment/hardware.
And the generation I was linked with needed "doing" not "talking at".
I moved on after just a few months but long enough to understand
the problems those "grey nomads" (willing) have "doing".
And you are younger than I , MamaT... so there :-~

Yep.. the latest versions it seems.
I am seeking feedback elsewhere but I don't hold any hope..
see my post in response to Pixie.

heh.. don't wee yourself.. it isn't *that* exciting! mhehe

You are correct , straight onto it in fact.
As to how it fixes the download?
You cannot fix stuff unless you have an idea of
what might be wrong with the thing.. yeh?
So first comes "recognition". Get the problem even
half recognised and you are in there with a fighting chance.
That borked code is a clue, a clue that says
"news readers won't like that".
So, without mucking around you just go straight into "fix
mode" without fooling around wondering and trying
stuff, like more downloads which cost you time and
more often, money.
>Hmmmm thinking here... maybe to actually download it from
>NewsBin?
>
That could work, yes.. but what a lot of fidgeting around, yeh?
And for one post? Believe me, there are any number of variations
in problems we get here in uploads. Fair enough your solution is
do-able but is it a long term practical solution?

They appear quite readily in a text only post buuut to see them
in a binary post you have to toggle on the "show raw message switch".
here's how:
Go to the toolbar at the top of screen in Agent:
Select "Message" and tick "Show raw message" in the menu.
You will now see all the "squiggly stuff" instead of that nice
neat "sewlogs.rar" delivery box.
A tip is... as soon as I see someone
pointing to a post the above is
what I do.. to check the raw data.
You do know that once you have _saved_ a file
with an error you have to download it again to fix it?
This is why I never "download and save" in this group.
I always get the headers first, select one part of a post and
download that, if it looks "good to go" I go get the rest. A bit of
fidgeting but it saves a lot of time in the long run.
>"Soooo if someone using NewsBin never took your suggestion and actually

Given the absence of any noise from Newsbin users I would have
to agree.
IF one was uploading and downloading using Newsbin
they may never have a problem, well...not that problem.
Newsbin is a weird tool, just check their comments on their FAQ page :-/
Whereas an Agent user, or anyone using a NNTP (Usenet) configured
downloading tool, is going to sit back and cry at the wasted bandwidth.
>Okay so my essay is complete :-)
>
Pretty fair effort too, if I may comment so.
>Please go on and tell me how close or far off base I am please...

Hokey.. I do understand you aren't sure you have the full picture
but that too is fine, you really don't need to.
If you ever get stuck there is always someone reliable who
can help out. There is the beauty of Usenet.
What you do need to know, and fully understand in operation,
is how to fix it.
So what do you do?
This is the "Quick Start" version.
We can go back step by step if anyone gets lost.. K?
You need a spanner, a man's spanner <g>
No, its not a big job but it is something you need to practice
a few times and write down the steps for next time.
For "click n go" just does not cut it..
You go get this tool.
http://www.yenc32.com/screenshots.php
Install it making sure you say yes to allowing it to associate
with "context menus".
Now.. for _any_ yEnc post in this group you download
the articles only. Do not "Save them as attachments".
You click on the first article of the post to highlight it.
Hold down Shift.
Click on the last article of the post.
Go to File>"Save Messages As" and click
I have attached that screen to show how to
set it up. There are no variations to this.
The screen must be set how I have it in the example.
When you are setting your target folder, do make
sure it is on a drive with plenty of room/space/hardrive
Click on "Save".
Go to your target folder using Windows Explorer and
locate the text file.
Highlight it and use one Right click to bring up the
context menu.
Choose "yDecode with yEnc32".
In the dialog box (yEnc32) select the target folder for
your files to unpack to.
Click on "Ok".
The archive will unpack in due course.
You may still get a "file is not complete" but ignore that.
The files will be complete.
Now you can go to where you unpacked your files and
start work sorting them.
A word of caution here?
yEnc32 is a utility that has a number of functions.
It is handy to have in your toolbox buuuut only ever
use it for this jobby. The other stuff it does is done
better by other tools.
As you can see it is not a five minute process but it
does work and my experience says that for this group
it is the only real productive way to grab all yEnc downloads
that are even close to being retrievable.
And somehow a bug has been lodged here in ABCP
that forces everyone (or most) to post in yEnc.
Something that is totally not necessary but it's there
so all one can do is bear and grimace and use tools
like yEnc32 to "spanner jobby" the retrieval.
You will get plenty of practice :->
I trust this will get you started.
The real solution is to have folks just dump
Newsbin. Period.
But this is Usenet, so that aint never going to happen.
cheerio
