My own preference is for an application that has only one module (or
at least only one 'entry point') that does everything. Artista is my
embroidery software of choice. It can do many things very simply, and
includes the tools for more complex and advanced functions. In
particular, I like the fact that manual and auto-digitizing, stitch
editing, pattern selection, etc., are all accessible from the same screen.

Embird can do just about everything, but I find its non-standard
interface very unintuitive, and many functions, although they appear
built-in on the menus, take you to separate modules and I find it hard
to figure out just where I am and what's open.

I believe that PE-Design (or the bit-for-bit identical Palette from
Babylock, usually somewhat less expensive) still has two or three
separate programs that integrate well together, but are still separate.

Like Embird, Babylock's Masterworks also has a number of separately
purchasable modules; I'm not sure whether, once installed, they
present a single user interface, or which of the plethora of modules
(if any) are included in which version of Masterworks (II and Lite).

Husqvarna/Pfaff software is also very powerful, but Customizing and
Digitizing are two completely separate applications.
