I think the electronics on the circuit bord gave up according to what you
discribe.
I also know that a HD manufacturer only will replace the drive and not the
software on it but if you are lucky they will help you.
I had a pdf file with a several hundred tips on what you can do when a HD
gives up but one of the first lines in the book was "As long as the drive will
spin up there is hope" A drive that does not spin up is a goner for the normal
tech and then you can send it to companies where they charge you many $$
per retreived MB or hope for the best and send it to the manufacturer.
