I took some time, and have managed to reproduce your problem! And, as
I had previously suggested, it results from combining the parts in an
incorrect sequence.
Taking the EL 12 days of Xmas as an example, it was in two parts, with
subject lines ending in
... "embroidery library 12 days of christmas.rar"(2/2)
and
... "embroidery library 12 days of christmas.rar"(1/2)
respectively.
Note that 2/2 PRECEDED 1/2. If you go ahead and combine them in that
order, all you get is a corrupted .rar file of just over 200kBytes, as
you discovered.
Outlook Express, and, I presume, Windows Live Mail, have the option to
sort or resequence multi-part posts. If you move them around so that
1/2 preceded 2/2, then you get the correct output file.
If the file were a book, it's like tearing it in half and then putting
the second half first. When it's read, you get to "THE END"
prematurely; that's exactly what combining out of sequence does and
why it results in a short (and unreadable) subset.
Hope this helps.
