For Goody,
Take no notice of the lamer ho[o]per.
He has no idea of anything embroidery related.
You are using the T00ls Agent. You will be able to tell the real
hopper from the fake.

"Wasteful" in a posting sense to Usenet.
It is one of many formats that are huge in their nature.
.DST is "worse" in size.
.Hus just seems to be the smallest available format.

In earlier days of Usenet, size mattered.
Size still matters, (when posting) but asking Ladies who only use a
particular format for their machine to convert for posting, is a
"posting nicety".
What does concern me in particular are the Ladies who have all the
files in ALL the formats sitting on their computer.
That's just ridiculous.
Annyrose (and Anny, it's just an observation for class purposes)
posted files today and VP3 format is not able to be converted by the
masses. Viking owners know what it is, not many other users.
VIP may cause concern for many, even today.
Quickly converting to Hus format before sending should see everyone
clear to convert or view them easily.
I have a bunch of .phc's sitting here in my "clueless" folder. I can't
convert those.
Hus is just a format that everyone can read.
Pes is also an older format, but there are different versions, up to
6??
I can't always convert version 6, my software is a bit older.
This is where hus stays stable. Hus is hus. There are no newer
versions of hus, Viking changed the name of the format, so as to avoid
confusion. Viking now have hus, VIP, VP3... and gawd knows what else
is on the way...
Silly idea. It is just a way to force people to spend money and
upgrade.
That offends me on many levels. Why upgrade if you are perfectly happy
with your current machine? They are forcing you out of your hobby if
you can't afford to upgrade as they slowly make your baby redundant.
How rude!

Converting to hus saves posting time/space/$$'s.
Hus being "universal" is basically saying there isn't a conversion
program that I have ever seen that can't convert it.
It's an old and respected format. Is all.

Pretty sure He means that. Smaller posting means faster retrieval.
Less time and less dollars spent by all.

Exactly!
We're not asking you to sacrifice your first born!
Just steer clear of the bigger sized files and ensure that you don't
have sets in 5 different formats stored on your machine.
Keep your pes, but keeping stuff in DST format for example is a
mistake.
DST is a bigger file size than pes.
Ladies seem to file and keep all the file formats that are posted.
That's not necessary.

You will see them when you are packing the post. Just delete them when
you find them.

It's a Windows thing... Gates thought we didn't have enough tags for
Himself to log us with.
To stop them reappearing --
Open Windows Explorer
Choose Tools in the Menu Bar, and Folder Options.
Then View from the tabs on the top of the next message window.
Scroll down (not far) and you will see a tick box for Do Not Cache
Thumbnails.
Tick that and they should stop appearing in every folder where you
open a picture file.
(You will still have to delete the ones that are already on your
machine).

Thumbs are something that logs when you view those little picture
icons in Windows Explorer. (Correct me if I'm wrong, Hopper).
Note to hopper... are they a hidden file? I've never checked cos I
always show all files.
Although they are only 1kb each, I've been told they can help to track
you... though nobody ever showed me how.../grin
To get rid of current ones on your system, go to Windows Explorer,
right click on the C:\ and choose
Search.
Type in *.db in the "Search for files or folders named:" part.
When they display in the right hand pane and the search is finished,
highlight them and delete them.
Or delete them as you find them in folders if you are not confident to
do a mass delete.

INCORRECT in relation to sewing files.
You are mistaken... as usual.
The only changes that (may) occur are "user specific" info. And by
this I mean textual insertions by the sewer and sewing commands have
different ways of being read across the different formats. This is
mostly why the different sized files.
Stitch "amounts" do change, but I have done some extensive testing on
this and believe the different format programs read jump stitches
differently, causing the stitch amount difference. Eg, hus may read
one jump stitch, but pes may put 5 stitches in the same amount of jump
space. Same jump, just a different amount of stitches.
Capiche?
File size (kbs) will vary with the different programs used to convert,
but the actual stitch out does not.
I have sewn the same file, on two different brand machines, using two
different formats, and I defy anyone to tell me which is which.
The file size difference happens because the different formats "store"
different kinds of machine information.
Eg, Art and VP3 formats are capable of storing textual hints that you
may want to implant when you remind yourself you used this file for
DH's shirt.
Be very careful with what you do write in these formats. You may be
giving out too much info about yourself.
In Hus format, this superfluous stuff gets stripped out, but ALL the
sewing info needed by the machine is left in tact.
If you post a VIP design, with personal text inserted to help you
remember something, and someone opens that file in Viking software,
they will be able to read your hints.
In Hus format, they will not be able to do so.
>Post in your netive format and let the others convert to what they need,

Post intelligently.
File on your computer intelligently. You use/need pes. Keep only the
pes formats. You only need to keep your format, for your machine.
Not all the different formats of the same thing that are posted.
I constantly wonder at the size of the memories on many of the Ladies'
computers. Searching gigs and gigs of large files slows down your
computer.
I choose to keep everything in hus format, and I still have enough
gigs of stuff to keep me tied up for hours when I back it up.
Pes format can be up to 4 times bigger than a hus file.
That is why the hus format was always a "preferred" posting format.
Is all.
No one is trying to convert the world to Viking machines! The format
is just computer friendly. :-)

You can run your own tests on file size Goody.
Do not be afraid of the conversion rant by the loon.
Many here store their stuff in hus format, and keep the stuff they sew
regularly in their machine's format.
Pixie :-))
