Slow Train Through Africa with Griff Rhys Jones
Summary
Five train journeys taking in the spectacular sights of Africa
S1-E1 North Africa
Summary
The comedian makes five train journeys taking in the spectacular sights of Africa, travelling to unexpected places in deserts and forests, villages and cities, and finding out how the railways are used today. He begins in the north, on a line that links the trading cities of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Stocking up for his trip at a souk in Marrakesh, he boards the train for a seven-hour ride to the ancient city of Fes, and eventually reaches the Sahara - and his final destination of Tozeur.
S1-E2 Kenya & Tanzania
Summary
The comedian attempts to zigzag his way 1,200 miles through Kenya and Tanzania, beginning this leg of his journey on a vintage steam locomotive designed in Glasgow. On a cattle farm established by an aristocrat a century ago, he dons a pair of overalls and joins workers as they bathe more than 2,000 animals to ward off parasites and biting flies. Later, in the vast Tsavo East National Park, he bottle-feeds orphaned elephant calves, before visiting a Maasai village - where he quickly regrets a faux pas during a meat feast.
S1-E3 Zambia & Zimbabwe
It certainly does look pretty wonderful when his steam train reaches its destination right in the middle of the Victoria Falls Bridge which, suspended 111 metres above the Zambezi River, affords spectacular views of the falls themselves.
Summary
The comedian begins the next leg of his trip in Kasama, northern Zambia. His first stop is the town of Mpika, where he meets college students training to be locomotive drivers. Next, in the capital Lusaka, he reveals how the first railways were built to access the country's rich mineral wealth, and watches craftsmen cutting emeralds and rubies - before being let loose on a pair of bejewelled cufflinks. Griff then reaches the spectacular Victoria Falls on his way to Zimbabwe's second-largest city, Bulawayo.
S1-E4 Namibia
Summary
The comedian makes five train journeys taking in the spectacular sights of Africa, travelling to unexpected places in deserts and forests, villages and cities, and finding out how the railways are used today. On the fourth leg of his journey across the continent, Griff travels across Namibia in the south-west, experiencing luxury camping, encountering cheetahs, and visiting 1,000-foot sand dunes.
S1-E5 South Africa
In what may be a first for TV railway documentaries, Griff Rhys Jones takes a hot bath while on a train. Beat that, Michael Portillo.
Summary
On the final leg of his journey, the comedian crosses 1,000 miles of South Africa, reaching the most southerly passenger railway station on the continent. Heading to Johannesburg, he reveals how the city has benefited from the scale of gold-mining in the area. Later on, he takes to the skies in a light aircraft for a bird's-eye view of one of South Africa's largest ostrich farms, and catches one of the world's most luxurious trains for a seven-hour ride to Cape Town, before reaching the coastal settlement of Simon's Town.
