BETTY CROCKER CAUSES BIG STINK IN ISRAEL
JERUSALEM: In the nation of Is Surreal, a good-will
visit to the hotly contested holy-land by America's
favorite hostess and hegemonist, Betty Crocker, caused
a near-riot among protestors, as she attempted to instruct
Palestinians in the fine art of polishing pots and pans.
"This is not about cheap petroleum", Betty insisted.
"This is about waxing the linoleum."

MERRY MEN GO GAY: SHOOT NUCLEAR ARROWS AT STRAIGHT-AND-NARROWS
NEW YORK: Terror in Pink Tights? A heretofore unheard-of
cabal of queers with quivers full of broken arrows has added
a new chapter to the annals of anarchy by threatening to resort
to archery against their arch-enemies, the Archie Bunkers
in the Catholic archdioceses. "These uptight buffoons have
entirely too much starch in their collars", claimed the
gay renegade band. "Far too predatorily have they prayed,
and far too often have they inappropriatelly pooped on our parades.
They are simply crabby because of entire lifetimes of
never getting laid. They refuse to allow condoms,
regardless of AIDS. If they don't get off of our backs,
we and our Merry Maids will clean house, not by lobbying
but rather by robbing them, and lobbing, into their laps,
some grenades."

The Amazon is a powerful warrior in Cold Fusion.
Her bow and javelin/spear skills have been equalized
to make either weapon a viable choice.
Her skills have also been reorganized to better reflect
the scale of difficulty in the game, and numerous skills
have been tweaked for better power / mana cost.
Two of the Amazon's three skill trees received extensive
reorganizing--these are listed below.

2. Three Decades of Cold Fusion
... The members of the Sherwood project went to great length to
prove that the neutrons could not have been created by
thermonuclear reactions.
http://www.infinite-energy.com/iemagazine/issue27/...
[Found on Google, Yahoo!]
In 1958 a team of fusion researchers under Baker,2 at the
Berkeley Radiation Laboratory, reported neutron production in
electromagnetically pinched deuterium gas. It turned out to be
the first major disclosure of non-thermal fusion reactions. The
research was performed within the U.S. program of controlled
fusion, code named "Project Sherwood"
and funded by the United States Atomic Energy Commission.
Declassification of this project in 1958 led to the paper by
Baker and his colleagues. Large numbers of neutrons,
representing nuclear ashes, had been detected in deuterium pinch
experiments as early as 1955. Electricity generation by neutron
heating of water and steam generation seemed to be around the
corner. The Berkeley experiment was simple and did not involve
complex and expensive apparatus. Progress apparently was as fast
as it had been in nuclear bomb research. But by 1958 the nuclear
physicists had discovered that the crucial reactions must have
been cold fusion and this was deemed to be a great
disappointment for, it was thought, a continuously functioning
nuclear reactor would have to start "burning" spontaneously once
it was "ignited." This was only possible with hot fusion.
The members of the Sherwood project went to great length to
prove that the neutrons could not have been created by
thermonuclear reactions. They listed no less than ten different
reasons, presumably in decreasing order of importance. The first
evidence for cold fusion was cited to be, primarily, the axial
expulsion of neutrons from the pinch column. Thermonuclear
collisions are known to produce an isotropic distribution of
expelled neutrons because of the random thermal motions of the
deuterons.

HOW BY THE HELP OF ROBIN HOOD AND JACK, SON OF WILKIN,
ALAN-A-DALE WAS WED TO THE LADY ALICE
JACK, son of Wilkin, as he stood in the wood, tying the last
bundle of faggots on a rough cart, which he had made himself,
little thought that there was hastening to him a message that
would have a very great effect on all his future life.
Jack was a well-built, sturdy youth of about twenty,
good looking, with quick brown eyes and freckled skin.
His head of curly brown hair never knew a covering,
except when snow was falling or the east wind blew shrill
in the frosts of winter.
He was a villein of the manor of Cromwell, and his lord was
Sir Walter de Beauforest, father of the lady Alice.
The lord hardly knew that Jack existed; sometimes he saw the lad
when he himself was going hawking or coming from the chase,
but he did not trouble to acknowledge the pull of the front lock
which Jack gave him. John the Thinne, however,
steward of the lord, knew Jack as one of the most willing
of the younger workers on the manor. Once on a while indeed,
when Jack was a boy of twelve, the steward had looked rather
sourly upon him, because the boy had been noticed by the lady Alice,
then a girl of but a year or two older, and she had made the
boy one of her falconers. When, however, Jack's father had died,
the lad had been compelled to do his work in return for the hovel
and the few square rods of land which supported his
mother and himself, and Jack had seen less of the lady Alice,
for whose smile or kind word he would have gone
through fire or water.
Frightened though he was, Sturt sought for and found the pick,
and the fairy had then invited him home to dinner.
Afterward Sturt often went to the green hill in the forest,
and in a year married the fairy's daughter and thrived all his
life. His children still lived at Norwell, and one was a freeman,
and all were lively little fellows, welcomed wherever they went
for their songs and jolly ways.
To whom long time in vain I prayed --
The haughty lady Alysoun.
Blow, northern wind,
Send me my sweeting,
Blow, northern wind, blow, blow, blow."
Meanwhile, there was no happier, cheerier man in all England than Jack,
Wilkin's son. For was he not now a freeman, and reaped his
own free land? Jack whistled and sang about his work all day,
a great thankfulness in his heart, both at his own good fortune
and at the thought that he had brought happiness to his own
fair lady, in helping to wed her to the man
she loved best in all the world.

Initial Performance of the 60-Inch Cyclotron of
the William H. Crocker Radiation Laboratory,
University of California
During the past few weeks, we have been engaged in the
adjustments of the 60-inch cyclotron of the William H. Crocker
Radiation Laboratory, and at this time we wish to report its
initial performance.
As is always fruitful in first turning on a cyclotron, we looked
for resonance in the first instance by placing a Geiger counter
nearby. With hydrogen, proton resonance was found close to the
expected value of magnet current, and we proceeded to build up
the intensity of the resonance effect by adjusting the magnetic
field with shims. Following this adjustment, the beam to the
target was observed and further shimming yielded 25 microamperes
at eight-million volt protons. Probe measurements indicated about
100 microamperes circulating within the dees.

And Betty Crocker? Well, she's another story. I got the red
cookbook from my mother for high school graduation, as did each
of my sisters. I took it to Israel and we had quite a few laughs
about the American approach to cooking (open a can of potatoes,
I kid you not)... but there were also many recipes I remembered
fondly (banana cream pie, among others). My cookbook is still in
storage in Israel.
Lately I've allowed myself to buy some things, even if I know I
own them there, if I keep thinking about them. And my kids have
been using my cookbooks (which tend to be vegetarian and cool
but without many pictures) and I thought about Betty Crocker
more than once. and it was on sale this week, probably because
of the publication of the recent book on the various
Betty Crockers. it is updated, still quite American, and full of
pictures. We're having fun. But we're still having spring rolls
for supper often (thanks, profgrrrl).
And I'm sure that it's all Phantom Scribbler's fault
