Prior to last week, I did not have a clue
what "Padam, Padam" meant. I had been
listening to a CD that I had bought in
St. Petersburg, Russia, with the translated
title of "Birthday", by Tania Bulanova.
A fellow in the CD store had said that
he did not care for her, but I bought it anyway,
just because I thought that she was attractive.
Most of the songs were forgettable, but she
did one song that shone far above the rest-
a superb version of "Padam,Padam", which I thought
had outdone the Edith Piaf original.
The orchestration had a distinctly Russian
feel to it, but I thought that this was very
harmonious with the soul of this French song,
and actually helped to enhance it.
I had tried translating the title with some
software that I had purchased, and it came back
just saying "Padam, Padam", which made me think that
it might be a proper name. I knew that the software
package was pretty good, because I had
tested it by having email conversations with a woman
who had taught English in France, and taught French in
America. I had asked this friend if Tania was singing
in French with a Russian accent, and she said, "No",
the French was very good, which is what I had thought.
I did not ask, however, what "Padam, Padam" meant.
I was just feeling a little bored over a lunch
break last week, so trying searching on an impulse,
not expecting anything, but becoming entranced
by the results.
Even when I posted this, earlier today, I did not know
that the English version of the singer's name was
"Tania Bulanova". I just had the cyrillic alphabet
version on the CD cover. I didn't realize that the software
package could translate people's names, until I discovered
that by accident, today. I have since learned that Tania
is someone who takes chances criticizing her government,
which sounds like a woman after my own heart.
Tania Bulanova put such passion into the song, which
I can now understand more clearly.
It was weird that the search for "padam" took me from
France to India. Also by odd coincidence, I was planning
a trip to France for vacation, last month, but fate
had wound up changing this a planned trip to
India in a couple months.
I was also not surprised to find interconnections with themes
like Chechnya or nuclear war (not in the song, itself,
but in the echoes that I found for the word "padam")
These morbid things just pursue me like ravens, vultures,
buzzards, bats, and bluebirds, that refuse to go away or
to leave me alone.
Surrealism is a bitch, but somebody's got to do it.
By the way, I just shovel this text like a robot
in a trance, and sometimes barely do more than
skim the text-bouquets that I am picking. I was
horrified to notice after posting that the original song
version was already rhyming "forget" and "regret".
Dammit.
Also, please don't blame me for being relentlessly
morbid, I am just painting of picture of the weird
world of higher consciousness that I am reading
by ESP, which I assure you creeps me out as much
as it does you.
It is just my job, and sometimes it is like
when you work in a chocolate store, and have so
much chocolate that it doesn't tempt you.
Speaking of which, St. Petersburg also turned out
to be great place for buying good-quality chocolates
at a very reasonable price. You can get excellent buys
on CDs, also.
If you want to buy the CD, there is a little store
at 34 Nevksy Prospect, St. Petersburg. I've still
got directions on a little card that offers 5-50%
discount, if anybody wants it. According to the
directions, if approaching from the north, you
start at the Black Market by Sobor Spas Na Krovia,
then head south by the Kanal Griboedova, and
it is right behind Italyanskaya ul. and the Grand
Hotel Europe.
If that is too difficult, then it might be easier just
to order it from this website:

Bulanova’s work seemed so derivative to some
that they suggested her costumes should

or “By the end of the second couplet
