I know it when I see it, but it is difficult to define.
The dictionary definition doesn't quite capture it.
Surrealism as opposed to ordinary weirdness or madness,
I suppose, is weirdness and madness that makes a point,
or exposes the hidden madness that lurks behind
supposed normalcy.
It is weirdness that is trying to challenge the reader's sense
of reality, or to bend reality itself, as you might bend a spoon
with your mind, if you are really good at it.
It ought to be weirdness that is creative and artistic,
not merely weirdness for its own sake.
Or, it ought to be a way for budding revolutionaries
to make psychological war on their oppressors.
Or, it ought to be a way of driving other people
mad, as a way to punish or reform them. A way
to instill healthy and civilized paranoia, as a psy-op
that would be worthy of spys having a war of nerves.
Or, perhaps a means for one-eyed madmen to express
prophecies inspired by forces beyond this world, for their
own personal entertainment, and for the enlightenment
of others.
