I saw reference to a word that meant: I have restated the concept as best I
can: "a phrase or idea that becomes
commonly understood by a group who had not actually experience the original
idea."  .  The example given was "Get out of Dodge". This phrase is derived
from old
American westerns.  Young US soldiers in Iraq us it with full understanding
but never saw the original source.

Now I can't remember the short 3 or 4 letter word to describe the phrase /
phenomena.
