Solomon's Private File #137
These stories about Stephen and Solomon take place starting in
1950's. Stephen wrote about his life in letters to a penpal, and then
in a secure blog, in case he lost his memory again, in the master
computer in his school for gifted students, which he started attending
in 2016 in a new incarnation, until his death. Now his son Solomon is
attending the same school, and is writing in his own secure blog for
his future incarnations.
All characters are fictitious, even if some of them might have names
that belong to some actual people, or act like people we know.
Solomon is 20 in this story, in the Spring of 2046.
Solomon's Private File #137 "Houston Astros"
START Page
I said to the Director of the FBI, "Premonition. Home grown
terrorists are going to try to blow up a baseball game in Texas. Don't
like orange juice, or something." He grinned and said, "I get it.
Houston Astros." I said, "Scan shows nothing yet. No date on the prem.
Problem is who should I tell, and when?" He said, "Do you know what
kind of terrorists?" I said, "Not clearly, but not Muslim. Different
diet. I know, it sounds stupid, but I don't get to choose what shows up
in these prems." He said, "Wow!" I said, "They picked a stadium in
Texas, because it's the only State they know." He grinned. He said,
"Your choice who to tell." I said, "Alright. Then I won't tell
I ported to the office of the Captain of the Texas Rangers. After
greetings, I told him about the prem. He said, "Tough you don't know
when. How do you want to play it?" I said, "I know how YOU want me to.
I do all the work." He grinned and said, "Right. But it's better that
way. If we increase any police presence there, well, one might have
something I can do to try to find out who might be thinking of doing
it. It's tricky two ways. If I interfere with what the prem says,
things could get all screwy." He said, "Paradox. I understand a little.
The other way?" I said, "It could be the wrong group I find." He said,
"So, how?" I said, "I would broadcast a very weak thought structured so
that only the minds that were intending to do this would react to it,
and then investigate them. If it works at all, there could be ethical
issues involved with that." He said, "But you've already set up
protection for Minute Maid Stadium and the surrounding area so no
explosives go off." I nodded. He said, "So we should let them go ahead
with their plans, and collect them after they get on the property with
the evidence." I said, "Planned. Just needed your approval."
He grinned and said, "Sure. Right. But, this time it's not me who has
to agree. The Houston Chief of Police and the FBI need to approve." I
said, "Already told the Bureau. I don't know the police there. YOU do.
Right. You don't get a free ride in this." He said, "I see. What if
they don't want to cooperate?" I said, "Then I step away. Then if any
property is damaged or people hurt, they will have to justify to the
public why they didn't let me handle it, and why they should still keep
their jobs. You knew that." He grinned and said, "Right. Just wanted it
official." I said, "I knew that." We exchanged grins.
He called the Chief and explained things. He wanted to see me in
person. I said to the Captain, "If you want to come along, tell him I'm
bringing you." He nodded his thanks and did that. After he hung up, I
said, "Seems he didn't want to share me." He said, "We don't share a
lot." I said, "Alright if I show a preference?" He just grinned his
face almost in half. I ported us to the Chief's office. There were
other people there. I said first, "I asked to see you, not these other
people. They can go." He said, "But they insisted." I said, "Only after
YOU gave them that opportunity, knowing they would. You caused, you
fix, and make them keep this confidential. Could be consequences if
they make any of this public in ANY way." He looked pleadingly at them.
All but one left. He said, "But the Mayor?" I said, "Right now, this is
a police matter. You can tell him all about it after you actually have
something useful to tell him. Mister Mayor. My methods work only when I
have complete control of the situation. I don't work this, FBI takes
over and gets all the credit, not your police department. I told them
already. So, what'll it be?" He said, "Well said. I'm NOT a Senator.
Would like to be a friend, though." He said to the Chief, "Full
cooperation. Keep me informed as much as you're able." He moved to
shake my hand. We did, and he left.
I said to the Chief, "Smarter than usual for a politician." Captain
tried not to laugh. Chief looked questioningly at him. I said, "I
brought the Captain with me because we worked a difficult case together
before. He knows something of my methods, and can give you an
experienced second opinion or two." They nodded to each other. We sat,
and I told the Chief what I had told the Captain. I said, "But
something new. Game after next. Scan still shows the area is clean.
Possible truck bombs arrive just before the detonation time. Hard to
to chuckle. He said to the Chief, "With his known odd humor, I was
wondering when he would say that." Chief still didn't like it. Then we
discussed possible plans of action. Rather, they did. Chief wasn't
convinced I should be in charge. I said, "I understand your position,
but what I said to that VERY smart Mayor is true. I don't have to do
said, "ANY police interference or publicity can ruin what I would do.
Problem is my evidence isn't legal. We have to catch them in the act in
order to have a legal case against them, and they won't act if they
suspect we know." He said, "But the danger!" I said, "Has it escaped
your notice that I've protected millions of people from much worse
dangers? Can YOU do that better?" He still couldn't decide.
I nodded to the Captain, and he pulled out his phone. I said, "Wait.
Hold off on telling the FBI. Mayor has the authority to fire him,
I started to give it to him when the Chief said, "Wait! I agree." I
said, "Fine. But I'm not sure I can count on you keeping that
agreement, so reluctantly given. So, I'll be watching you. One little
step out of line, and I put you into time stasis, and after it's all
over, I discuss it with the media. Do well, and you can have all the
credit. I don't need any, and actually don't want any of it. People
shouldn't know I do this. They shouldn't depend on me to fix every
little problem they cause for themselves." He looked at me in new
appraisal. He said to me, "I sincerely apologize. I didn't understand."
He said to the Captain, "Was he the same with you?" He said, "Mostly,
yes. A live fire situation with children in the compound. I didn't have
time or will argue over jurisdiction. He took over with my whole
hearted approval, and kept me informed, and even asked for my opinion
on some things, and acted on them. Same lack of credit." Chief said to
me, "Yours all the way."
I said, "They're going to do this in three possible ways. Vehicle
bombs. Previously planted bombs, probably from a previous game. Or same
day planting, and run. If they're smart, all of those. But how smart
could they be?" Chief grinned and said, "Right. I think I'm going to
like this." Captain nodded in agreement, with a smile. I said, "We'll
need bomb disposal people on call. I won't let any explode, but they
will have to be disarmed and documented for evidence. We won't know
what kind of police involvement there should be until we find out how
they're going to do this. I have a watch set up so that if anything
they could use for this shows up in a 10k radius of the Stadium, I'll
know. There already is, but for industrial use. Still watching that,
though. Could be taken. Next game is the thing to watch. Oh no! I'm
going to have to watch baseball! I tried playing it in summer camp.
BORING!"
Captain said with interest, "How did you play?" I said, "I tried to
make it even more boring by hitting the ball so far, they couldn't find
it." Laughter. I said, "But they were so sad, I didn't do that as often
as I wanted to. Most of the time I gently hit the ball into the
opposing players' gloves. Well, even at 11, I was a super genius
instant calculator, with a doctorate in physics, and was VERY
physically fit. I could calculate exactly how to hit the ball to send
it where I wanted, instantly, in the fraction of a second after it left
the pitcher's hand." He said, "I see why it would be boring for you." I
said, "Nope. The boring part was standing around while all the other
things were happening. Er, except for one time. I was playing third. I
caught the ball and threw it to first." Chief played along and said,
"So, it didn't work as planned?" I said, "First base man never even saw
it. Probably saved his life. Went right past him with 2cm clearance,
and almost gave the pool lifeguard a heart attack, when it hit his
platform with a loud bang, halfway across the camp." They laughed very
hard.
I said, "I never told him it was me who did it. Just did. He's
laughing up a storm. Yes, he knows who I am, but not then. No, he's not
psionic. I can do mindtalk with anybody, even animals, but they don't
talk back in words, just feelings." Captain said, "A demonstration?" I
said, "It's just silent talking, not mind reading. How about I hook us
all up to do that?" They nodded. I said in their minds, "It's like
talking. Try it." Chief said, "Wow!" I said, "I meant try something
original." Laughter. Captain said, "Very interesting. We can all hear
each other. Not just words, but some feelings, too." I said, "Kind of
makes up for the lack of body language we usually share with regular
speech, that often communicates more. Closing the connection now." I
did that.
I said, "It's something like that we use to monitor each other, and
other things that are more intrusive when needed." Chief said, "Can
anybody learn to do that?" I said, "To do what I did does require some
talents and knowledge. There are some possibilities for misuse by the
strong minded, so all who can, are monitored. Anybody we find misusing
psi to do unethical things to people, we take away their psi. That
applies to anywhere in the galaxy." He said, "You've done that out
there?" I said, "Keep secrets?" They agreed. I said, "Yes, to hundreds
at once, across 37 planets they had taken over. After I er, tricked
them into asking me to do it." They gave me gigantic grins. Captain
said, "Please." We knew what he meant. I said, "We had to be very
careful. In a psi fight, you do NOT want to show them something they
didn't know about that they can use against you, and after beating you,
your people. That can put you at a disadvantage when what they do know,
while less advanced, they know better than you do, and are more
powerful in it. Such was the case with these aliens. They had taken
over other planets and psionically operated on people's brains to make
them extensions of themselves, like a hive mentality. Their PK was VERY
powerful, and I had only just begun teaching it to my students, which
my father never had. We needed to take one of the psimasters to examine
him, to plan further action. We created a gigantic monster using their
same abilities, but enhanced with more advanced ones inside where they
couldn't detect that, and made it rampage through their main city. In
the process, it ate one of the masters. Kind of. We ported him to a
secure place, and examined him."
"We had to do it that way, so they wouldn't suspect they were being
attacked by er, us. Then I carried through with my plan I had announced
when we discovered them. I'll show you." I did, and they had a lot of
different reactions to that, from laughter to awe. I said, "God healed
their mental slaves in the love broadcast, then I removed all their
powers. The Dad part of God said 'what took you so long', with humor. I
knew it was no coincidence that I had been teaching the very thing we
would need to defeat them." Chief said, "When you faced the Masters, if
they had all attacked you, could you you have beaten them?" I said,
"Without exposing advance techniques to them, which I was bound not to
do, odds were slightly in my favor that I would survive the attack. But
that doesn't take into account the psychological. I was pretty sure
they wouldn't. I'm a shrink. That's my real weapon. Like the time I
convinced some militia not to start an armed rebellion, without
communicating with them." I told them about the gun modifications, and
showed them and the results. They had some big wows for that. I said,
"Something extra about that case. FBI was informed about it by a
patriotic citizen who had heard them discussing it. A naturalized
immigrant from Iran." They looked strange, and then nodded.
I said, "It takes all kinds to make America. There are good and bad
ones in every kind and class of people. In my group, we have Muslims.
Most religions and ethnicities. Strange, but no Mormons." Captain said,
"Do you know why?" I said, "Possibly the ones who would have qualified
were home schooled. We wouldn't have access to the scholastic reports.
We should change that. For the rest of the world, we use other means to
find candidates. I'll take a look. Ha! I've just informed our er, head
recruiter. He's thinking about kicking himself. I told him I wouldn't
help him in that." Grins. He said, "A Mormon?" I said, "Not going to
say who. I wasn't looking specifically for any person, just who might
qualify. We had one we didn't notice as a child, who we found later.
Eli." They nodded. I said, "Problem with China. State school fills the
kids with so much programmed junk, they can't learn in our system, and
don't even want to. Got a student from another dimension, though."
They looked surprised, then the Captain said to the Chief, "Rose
talked about that on CNN." He remembered and said, "How human is he?" I
said, "Only a slight difference in genes shows the difference." He
said, "Cross fertile?" I said, "Sexually compatible, very much so.
Enthusiastically so, actually." Chuckles. I said, "But some genes won't
work together. Natural conception would result in an idiot. We do NOT
intend to create idiots. We don't need any more politicians." Laughter.
I said, "Been to that stadium?" They both said, they had. I said,
"Were in it would YOU hide bombs?" They thought for a while. Chief
said, "I see what you mean. They do a thorough cleaning after each
game. In the stands, the upper level would be best for maximum effect,
but I don't know how they would conceal it." Captain said, "Best place
to conceal it is where they wouldn't look." I said with a smile, "And
where would that be?" He said, "Food prep areas, and storage for
cleaning supplies." I said, "Good. Yes. Would be convenient if they had
an accomplice on the inside." He said, "Do they?" I said, "If I look,
and if it turns out they do, can you keep your mouths zipped until the
takedown?" They both said they would. I said, "The answer is yes and
no. They do have an inside person, but that person thinks it's for a
harmless practical joke. All the others check out fine for now. The
insider is obviously not enough for them. But that gave me a lead to
one of the perps, and from him to all the rest." I didn't say anything
more. They looked at each other, as the silence dragged on. Chief said,
"Alright, I'll bite. You're not going to tell us?" I said, "Correct.
Your sense of duty might cause you to interfere with my plans. And
another reason, which applies to most of what I do with law
enforcement."
Captain said, "You teach. I see that here. You want us to figure out
what will happen and how to deal with it." Chief said with some
interest, "I see that, with making us think like we're them." I said,
"One more thing. Two can play that better than one." I gave the Captain
a button and said, "Press this when you're standing, and I'll port you
home when you want to go. Want to be in this every time I meet with the
Chief?" He said, after a look in that direction, "Yes please." I stood
and said, "I'll see you both before they start prepping for the next
game." I offered to hug, and they both accepted. I helped them to sit,
and ported home.
Mom said, "PsiMaster story. I just noticed something. Their PK wasn't
the real danger. You practiced for that, and could use the 4th for
power. It was their combined telepathy." I said, "Actually, yes. I
would have had to kill myself if they had tried it. But I knew they
wouldn't even think of it. Their whole psychology was about INDIVIDUAL
personal power, as shown in their telepathic control over their OWN
slaves. They would never have considered opening their minds to each
other to combine their telepathy to attack me. To them, attack was a
physical thing. Their telepathy was so strong, they could take over
their slaves easily, so it wasn't a weapon to them." She said, "Danger
point when one tried to read your mind." I said, "Yes, but they only
knew that I detected it, and stopped it with a sleep cast. They didn't
know if I could have resisted it, but probably thought, by then, that I
could. But I distracted them with other things right after that. There
was a flow going, that wouldn't allow anything but what was supposed to
happen. The only real risks I take, that involve personal danger, are
with the totally unknown, where I can't calculate the odds."
She said, "But still, you didn't have to be the front man for that
mission." I looked at her, and she said, "Alright, you did. It was your
idea, and you're the best at the skills it needed." I said, "Actually,
it goes both ways. I plan around what I can do, but that time it was
critical. I was the best at telepathy, so I was the most able to resist
an attack of that kind." Galya said, "I feel the same. I don't want him
to take those risks, but do I want one of us with less ability to do
that instead? It's not just for the success of the mission, but would I
want to be responsible, by holding him back, for the guilt he would
feel if his replacement were injured, where he wouldn't have been?" Mom
said, "I know. It would tear us all apart." I said, "And unnecessary.
I'm not indispensable. I've got a kid, and filled a bank with wigglers.
All the skills that the spawn of Stephen can and should learn, are not
peculiar to me now." Mom said, "But there is something extra in you." I
said, "Past lives, and what that does to enhance the rest of me, yes.
There will be more like that soon. I do have to admit that there is
power in my personality, but some of that has come from my home
experience, and by circumstance of being the leader. When I go, another
will develop along those lines. If Dad had stayed, I would not be who I
am now." Galya said, "So you must die for our daughter to become who
she should be?" I said, "You know that is the natural order of things.
But for us, it doesn't need to be SO drastic. I will be needed for the
big job the next generation will have to deal with, but I may not be
the leader then. Will that bother me? Absolutely not!" Hugs and kisses.
