Solomon's Private File #120
These stories about Stephen and Solomon take place starting in
1950's. Stephen wrote about his life in letters to a penpal, and then
in a secure blog, in case he lost his memory again, in the master
computer in his school for gifted students, which he started attending
in 2016 in a new incarnation, until his death. Now his son Solomon is
attending the same school, and is writing in his own secure blog for
his future incarnations.
All characters are fictitious, even if some of them might have names
that belong to some actual people, or act like people we know.
Solomon is 18 in this story, in the Spring of 2045.
Solomon's Private File #120 "Spy Versus Spy"
START Page
I was awake and working before my associates were. I said, "They
haven't stirred. This being Saturday, do you think they will?" Major
said, "I think they will meet with those they sell secrets to." Smith
said, with us looking expectantly at him, "I think they will not, only
because he said they would." We all grinned. We ate breakfast. We were
in place when the pawn shop underneath us opened. I said, "The store is
being watched." I had to show them a slightly moving shadow at a corner
of a building. They were surprised I could see it. I explained, "Two
things helped me to see it. What you can do to tune your hearing, also
works for your other senses, and I looked for what I expected." Smith
nodded and said, "Vas?" I said, "Possibly. Short shadow, calculated
from the angle of the sun. Do you think Greg will be washing the car
now?" Major went to check that with the drone, and said, "How did you
know?" I looked at Smith, who said, "Because there is no school, and he
would wash it in the daytime, and he isn't with Vas. If one would be
watching the store, both would if they could." I nodded approval. Major
said, "The device is in place! He didn't drop it, and I don't see that
anybody noticed." I checked and said, "It's operating. I will keep the
sound transmission active until Greg leaves."
I said to both, "What will the police do if they notice Vas?" We had
a discussion about it, but came to no conclusion. Then I received a
call from the store. Sarge said, "We've got a watcher. Do you know
anything about it?" I said, "I might. It could be one of the local
children who I had to dissuade from breaking into the store at night.
It seems as if I wasn't convincing enough in telling him how mean and
dangerous you are." He chuckled. He said, "Better you do it than us. We
don't want any problems with the parents." I said, "I think you know I
can be a little effective in frightening people." He had to laugh. I
said, "I'll have to take care of it. If your customers detect him, he
could be in real danger." He said, "I agree. Thank you for your help."
I said, "You are welcome." I said to my team, "I have to go out and do
something about Vas." I put something in my ear. I said, "We'll be able
to communicate if needed."
I went out the back, and circled unseen to be behind Vas. I grabbed
his arm, and he almost jumped out of his clothes. I pulled him back out
of view of the store. I said to him, "Did you intend to die so young?"
He looked more surprised at me and said, "What do you mean?" I said,
"Dangerous criminals go to the store to sell what they steal. If they
see you spying on them, they will either leave and go to another store,
or they will come after you and kill you. If they just leave, what do
you think those in the store will do about it, losing business because
of you?" He said, "Oh! I didn't think of those things." I said, "I'm
here because those in the store noticed you. Yes, we have cameras in
the store. You saw that when we showed you those we were interested in.
I suggest you find some other activity to occupy your time, safely." He
said, "Can I go with you?" I said, "No. We should not be seen walking
together. People who see us will wonder why you are with a strange man.
That will cause very unneeded problems for both of us. At our house, we
will be working, and so won't have time to er, entertain you." He said,
"Oh. But later?" I said, "That could be possible, but if those we are
interested in are doing something, we will have to be paying attention
to that." He said, "I understand. Thank you for saving me." I said with
a small smile, "And no thanks for frightening you almost out of your
skin?" He said with a big grin, "Correct!" I gave him a little push,
and he ran off. I made my way back to the house.
Major said, "Greg is washing the car more than it needs." I said, "We
don't know how often they pay him. He may be waiting for that." He
said, "But you don't believe that." I said, "It might be so, but what
motivates him most now is curiosity, a contagious and dangerous
condition both boys seem to have contracted." They nodded. Smith said,
"What if they take him?" I said, "If they are smart, they won't. They
would think his parents would know of the business connection, and
would report that to the police if he didn't come home when he should."
Major said, "But are they that smart?" I nodded to Smith, who said,
"Their boss is. He rescued the situation of the beating the only way
possible, by giving the boy a job. Yes, he's that smart. He doesn't
want his whole operation compromised because of a curious boy. And
because he has been careful not to use psionics to harm anybody, he may
also be as careful not to harm a child for the same reason. It is well
known how Solomon feels about that." Major said, "Well reasoned. I hope
it is true."
I said, "They are stirring in the house. The housekeeper has been
cooking." Smith said, "That would get ME up!" We looked at him. I said,
"Any good woman would want to feed you, who looks so much in need of
it." He looked really strange, while major was trying not to laugh.
Then he had to laugh, too. I said, "We should have their phones
monitored now. They call or receive a call, this will announce it, and
try to trace the other phone, allowing us to hear the conversation." I
showed them the app on the tablets. Major said, "This is not something
I've heard of before." Smith nodded agreement. I said, "Intelligence is
not just a title." They grinned. I said, "Classified." Nods. We had
lunch.
An hour later, Greg gave up and left. Then they made a call. We
listened. Then they made another call. What they said was obviously a
code. I said, "Disposable phones on the other end. No GPS, but tower
triangulation shows possibilities." We looked at the map. Smith said,
"I think these embassies." They were of Ecuador and France. Major said,
"I wonder if they know of each other." I said, "I wonder if there will
be any more to wonder about." There was. Israel. Smith said, "Not very
particular." I said, "Not even paid loyalty. Now we have to decide what
we shall do about this. Our cameras have a normal erasing feature. What
is not normal is that it can be used remotely. They used other cameras
as well. If we erase only what is in our cameras, they will know about
us. But if we don't, damaging secrets will be sold. You will represent
your own countries in this discussion. I will moderate."
Major said, "We can take them now." Smith said, "But we don't know
what other countries they may have sold to, or plan to sell to. I
understand the loss of information, but against what is already lost?"
Major said, "We don't know how important the other information was, and
how important the information now is." They looked at me. I said,
"Past, very. Current, not much. I checked that." Major said, "Then I
agree to let this happen. Then we take them when they next try to steal
more information." They looked at me. I said, "I asked for that, and it
was provisionally agreed to." They looked irritated. I tried not to
grin at that. They noticed, and tried not to chuckle. I said, "But how
can we take them, if they can will us to sleep?" They looked unable to
think of a solution. I fingered the insulation on the wall. Smith said,
"Insulated hats!" Major was looking like he wished he had thought of
that.
I said, "Opinion. Where will they meet each buyer, and will they all
be in the same place but at different times?" Votes were for a
restaurant or small park, and at the same place. I said, "Will the
buyers have people watching that location before and after if they
can?" Smith said, "If they have bought from these people before, they
won't have watchers. They would know they are psionic. If new buyers,
they should, but I don't know if they would, except the Israelis. They
would." I said, "Would any of the buyers be psionic?" That threw them.
I said, "In this new age, we must always think of that now." Major
said, "If they had one, the Israelis would make him the buyer. They
take espionage MOST seriously." I said, "Do you think we should have
drones over their embassies?" They did, and put them into the air. Then
they practiced with the autopilot capabilities.
The perps got into their car. Major said, "Israel is first! Oh, the
light went on. Psionic?" I said, "Seems so. He has a driver. Will let
him off near the meeting place the buyer will walk to. They will
maintain radio contact. I would, so they would." They nodded. I said,
"Stupid! Not a restaurant! They have cameras." Smith said, "But they
could disable them." I said, "Yes, but that could be noticed. And if
noticed, somebody might remember who was there at the time." They
looked at me in admiration. I said, "I am NOT a video monitor." They
went back to the job. Perp was there first, at an outdoor table. I
said, "They think that is good. Out of rage of inside cameras. ATM
across the street has a camera. People forget those. Ha! Not the
Israeli! He will not face it. I like him." They chuckled. Major said,
"Great praise." Smith nodded agreement. The spies traded envelopes. I
said, "Does the spy have one of our cameras with him?" Smith checked
and said, "He does! And it's recording the conversation. The camera was
a brilliant idea!" I said, "I agree. I wish I could take honest credit
for all its unplanned for uses." Major said, "I have to agree." The
Israeli left. A drone tracked him. I said, "Got him! He walked by a
camera. He didn't show he noticed it. If he didn't disable it, we have
proof, added to the drone video. I'll tell our people to check all the
cameras in the area."
The perp stayed. Ecuador buyer wasn't careful at all. Neither was the
one from France. Neither were psionic. The perp went home with a lot of
money. They had supper. So did we. The boys came to the back of the
house. Smith went down to let them in. I said, "Have you eaten?" Greg
said yes, before Vas could say no. We all noticed that, and stared at
him. Greg figured it out, and had to laugh. I took out some money and
said to Greg, "Your full payment as promised." He was very happy with
it. I said, "What you're doing to it won't make it grow bigger." They
giggled. Vas tried to look sexy and said, "But we are very good at
making other things bigger." I said, "As you almost tried. Your
stomachs should thank you for that." He looked a little confused, and
then a little irritated. My team tried not to laugh. He said, after
gathering his courage, "We LIKE you. It wasn't the stomach I was
thinking of." I said, "Oh, now I understand. And you would want payment
for that, too." He nodded. I said, "True friends to not ask for or
accept money for that. I think you understand." He nodded. Greg poked
him, and said, "I'm not asking for money. I like you you a lot. I just
want to be more friendly." I said, "I appreciate that. We all do, but
we are responsible people. And we will be gone from here soon. It is
not wise of us to do as you have said." Vas almost cried. He said, "I
was wrong. I feel as Greg does. You are VERY good people. VERY kind.
You really care about us." My team nodded, and I said, "We do. We do
this work because we care." Smith said, "We risk our lives to help keep
people safe. We could not do with you what some would consider unsafe."
Major said, "That is true, because we DO care about you."
The boys did cry. We hugged them. I said, "We are almost finished
here. The bad people will be captured soon by the authorities, after we
present our evidence. This may be the last time we will see each other.
So this should be our farewell." They nodded. Vas moved to hug me, and
he kissed me. Then Greg did. I signaled to Smith to allow it. He did,
and not reluctantly. Then they hugged and kissed the Major, who led
them out. I said to Smith then, "Different culture. What they offered
and the kiss does not signify they are homosexuals, or that they
assumed we are." He said, "Thank you for the explanation. I was
beginning to understand that. And that I felt love for them." I said,
"Children inspire love. It reminds us of what we are for." He nodded.
Major came back in. He and Smith talked. I typed away on a pad. I
said to them, "The criminals will be arrested tomorrow morning. Just
before that, Solomon will disable their psychic abilities, to last
until they are out of prison. He has decided to do that to all psychic
criminals he knows of, if they have not harmed anybody with their
power. All our evidence has been transferred. We will stay the night
and keep a watch on them. That means we won't be available for the
capture. They and the public are not to know who we are. Our mission
ends at that time. Now for the worst part of the mission. Reports."
Smiles. I said, "You are to write your own. If you collaborate, try to
make it not obvious. Keep the specifics of the technology that was used
here to a minimum. Personal praise is not as appropriate as you might
want it to be." They grinned at each other. I said, "You may lose
credibility by it." They nodded. I said, "I feel some relief at that
acknowledgment." Chuckles. I said, "If you wish me to read or
contribute to your reports before transmitting them, I will, but I will
make no corrections of my own. Not that I wouldn't wish to." Chuckles.
I said, "Orders will be delivered to us after the capture. I don't
know when, exactly, or what they will be." Major said, "But you know
something about them." I said, "I suspect we will be ordered to return
to our previous er, situations that we had before this mission. Until
they can invent something new for us to do." Smith said, "You have made
recommendations." Major nodded and said, "You always do." I said, "Why
wait for them to ask?" They grinned. I said, "You may be thinking I
would make them even if they didn't ask. Good thinking." Chuckles.
Smith said, "Do they comply with them?" I said, "Those who know me
well, might be more motivated to do that, than others." Laughter. Smith
said, "Would you tell us what they are?" I said, "I am not able to. I
haven't composed them. There is still time for you ruin everything."
Grins. Major said, "Will we work together again?" I said, "I don't know
what I will be asked to work on, but if I had a choice, and it works
for the mission, I would er, make you available. Both of you. I chose
you for this. My operational reasons for that have NOT diminished. I
suggest we start working on our reports, before an excess of emotion
clouds our objectivity." They nodded, trying to hold back tears. We
went to our rooms.
I asked for an S Kid conference. It was via shielded mindtalk. I
said, "You all know of my decision." George said, "Yes. More work for
us, but needed. Psionic criminals, ugh! Public has to know we won't
stand for that." Elise said, "Right. Too bad we couldn't do more to
them. I know, they didn't hurt anybody." I said, "But that's not the
reason I called this meeting for. This mission couldn't occupy even a
thousandth of my mind. I did other work during it. I made a discovery.
I know which genes cause genius, and how to activate them. What should
I do with that knowledge?" Silence. I said, "I didn't ask for silence."
More silence. I gave them a rude noise. Amusement shared. Daren said,
"You have to ask your father." They agreed. I said, "I didn't need you
to tell me that. No personal opinions?" None. I said, "Do you expect me
to ask you for advice in the future?" George said, "Yes." I gave them
another bad noise. We shared love.
That didn't help. I really missed Pete and Chad. They might not have
had any useful advice for me, but they would have been wise, and funny,
too. I morned their loss more, then. A lot. There was a poke from Dad.
He almost drowned me in love. He left a package. I spent all night
opening it and digesting its contents. There were instructions about
what to do with my new discovery. Nothing. Except in a very unusual
situation. The other things in the package I'm still trying to make
sense of. Could be even more interesting. Oh!
