Playing .mkv files:
If you currently use a recent version of the VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) or MPlayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/) media player on Linux, Mac OS X or Windows - you're all set, as those are already Matroska compatible. If you use Windows and prefer to use Windows Media Player, there are a number of DirectShow plugins that will enable it to play .mkv files - you can find references to those on the Matroska site at http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html. If you use Mac OS X and wish to use QuickTime Player, there is Perian (http://perian.org/), a plug-in that enables playback of a number of non-Mac media formats, including .mkv files.
