As Inspector Ronald Coleman and his wife, Margaret, spend an evening with the Laird of the area, Sir Harold Kelso, and his wife, Lady Penelope, he receives a call from his Sergeant to come down to a crime scene on the moors where a dead woman has been found. It is someone that the Inspector knows: Helen Fraser - wife of Callum Fraser.
Callum knew his wife was having an affair but didn't give a damn as long as she was around to cook his meals and iron his shirts. But a few days earlier Callum had just got his bank statement and found, to his surprise, that she had been forging his name to to his cheques. The evening of her death he was seen in the local pub drinking heavily and making wild threats about what will happen to his wife.
But Helen was only the first body found on Sir Harold Kelso's estate. The following day, a second body was found - that of Derek Grainger; but while Helen was run over by a car, Derek had a full shotgun blast to the chest. As Inspector Coleman contemplates the odds against of two separate murders happening on the same night on Kelso's estate, a lot of pressure is being put on Coleman and Astor to solve those crimes.
