Initially released as a self-titled EP by the tiny
imprint Smallstone in mid-2002, Death Via Satellite
finds theSTART regrouped and ready for a new beginning.
Signed to Nitro in late 2003, this mini-package doesn't
differ from the original except for the foxy artwork.
It's a great start for those unfamiliar with the Los
Angeles band's intoxicating punky dance sound while
also being a must-have for completists. The band's 2001
new wave blast debut, Shakedown!, left fans hungry for
more, so this six-song mini-album is a treat. Elements
of the Cure and Depeche Mode are obvious throughout,
especially on the goth-driven swan song "Trinity." One
can notice that the band is sticking with its formulaic
dance-punk without getting monotonous. Frontwoman Aimee
Echo is vocally sharp and stylish, almost a match for
Lene Lovich on tracks like "Death Via Satellite" and
the ballsy "Big Shot."
And that Aimee Echo girl? That's one ugly bitch.
