This is the first time I've played entirely solo since, well, I wonder if anyone out there can remember? I'm really not into using a laptop for music and way too old to change now. The one time I took one it was simply running text cues telling me what was coming. Frankly, I don't like seeing them on stage when folks gaze blankly into them and... Oops, climb down off your high horse boy!
Anyway, here I had the Cirklon - at a stage when it didn't have track names. So with 32 possible tracks in each tune, I occasionally picked one that gave me unexpected results. See if you can spot some.
If you really want to know, here's how it was done...
Cirklon controlled the Proteus 2000, Fantom, Lancet and Radias, although I was able to take over any of these via the keyboards (and did from time to time).
The Lancet went through an Eventide Timefactor and was my main bass/sequence/tweaky machine.
Weird stuff was added by the Synthi (naturally) and Repeater.
Keyboards and clocked arpeggiation came from the V-Synth (processed through the Pitchfactor) and the Virus (looped and processed through the KP3). All synced to Cirklon's clock.
The songs were pretty unstructured (as if I needed to say) and the mixing was occasionally erratic due to me not having enough arms. Actually, the mix was better than most of my live stuff and I'm working on making it better in future, maybe by giving Cirklon even more control, leaving me less plates to juggle.
The gig was therefore live but improvised around prepared Cirklon sequences. I've done very little to it, only tidied a couple of nasty volume spikes. There was little I could do about the notes played but fortunately not too many fluffs, which makes a change. The super-tight sequencer timing is achieved by Cirklon's super-tight code and five MIDI output ports (I didn't have the CV output option then). MIDI is a serial interface, in case you were wondering why the multi-port thing is important. Right, geek overload yet?
At some point I'll get a studio album out, if this format works out. I'm about halfway through one. It'll be different than this. - Paul
