In the morning Setuweh went looking for Lehuoh. He found his young lover facedown in the small lake. Setuweh reached out and pulled Lehuoh to the shore. He could not believe his eyes. The bottom half of Lehuoh's body had been transformed into a fish. Instead of legs he had yellow-green scales and a large flipper where his feet used to be. Lehuoh no longer had the flat chest of a boy. He had two tiny breasts that were round and soft.
Setuweh laid Lehuoh out in the morning sun to warm. There was just enough heat to melt his icy body.
Setuweh did as he was told and Lehuoh received the divine water. Immediately afterward there came crawling out of his body many, many tiny humans, emerging out of every possible crack and crevice. They were male and female and were fully formed adults. The new humans ate Lehuoh's body and drank his blood. This was their first nourishment. The humans that had been miraculously born would soon become strong and courageous.
Setuweh watched everything that was happening. Soon there was nothing left of Lehuoh's body. By dawn it had been completely consumed by the new humans.
So great was the quantity of tears that the small lake overflowed its banks. A new river was formed. It flowed all the way down and became the Great Lake. In our tongue the river is called Nah-TAHK-kah-day Toh-NAH-ha, which means River of Tears.
For my people this is the story of Lehuoh and Setuweh. You know these by the names Beauty and Wisdom.
