The Nike Ajax was less than stellar, that is true. However, the USA based Nike
Hercules almost all carried thermo-nuclear warheads ranging in yield from 2 -
30kt, this dramatically increased the chance of a kill. You know what they say,
close only counts with horse shoes, hand grenades and thermo-nuclear weapons.
Intercepting a target in the vicinity of a large population center was
considered to be less than an ideal scenario.
As a side note, many Nike sites were manned by the Army National Guard. I
believe this was the only scenario in published history when National Guard
troops were equipped with nuclear weapons.
