Great aircraft! I flew in the VietNam War as a helicopter pilot but had the
opportunity to fly as a passenger with a fellow pilot qualified in the U6.
On a routine flight, the prop seal broke splattering oil all over the wind
screen making it difficult to see straight ahead. He had to land the thing by
cranning his head out the door window and looking forward!
Maintenance was dirt simple in some cases.
A magneto check would tell you if you had a problem but not which cylinder...so
the crew chief would take a old fashioned wax crayon and heavily mark each
cylinder head. Crank up the engine and the cylinder with the problem ran
slightly cooler causing the crayon mark to melt slower than the rest of them
revealing it as the one with a magneto problem.
Don't know what they do nowadays, but back then, it seemed like an effective
method.
