The technology to develop these supermegagiants exists. However, there is
this matter of profitability and recouping development costs.
For example, Airbus will have to build 420 A380s to break even. Right now
Airbus is still far off its target with 282 planes sold. Among these orders,
11 are really shaky: 5 for Kingfisher and 6 for Virgin Atlantic. Some
analysts question whether Airbus will ever break even on this program as it
will need redesign at some point (around 250-300 planes manufactured). The
objective of a Ultra High Capacity Airliner or UHCA is lower operating cost
per passenger, as the seating capacity floor area is nearly twice that of
the 747-8 (two decks). However, given that airports had to be reconfigured
to operate the A380 and there are numerous other factors associated with the
flyaway cost of each aircraft, this becomes questionable.
