I remember that incident at Reno in 2011. That was Jimmy Leeward and
his "Galloping Ghost". The accident was caused by a detatched left
elevator trim tab. He managed to miss the spectators, but there were
still 7 deaths (including Leeward) at the crash site, and multiple
injuries from impact debris flying into the stands. Four more
spectators died of injuries at the hospital.
Leeward had modified his P-51 radically, initially by shortening the
wing span 4ft. Later he clipped another 3 feet from either side making
it a real stub wing. Then he removed the under fuselage radiator system
and installed a "boil off" cooling system, then the classic P-51D
canopy was replaced by a tiny shell, all in the search for improved
aerodynamics and speed.
