As much as I love Howard, he's not perfect. He is out of touch with a lot of
culture, and I don't think he would deny that. I can see why he wouldn't even
want to consider podcasts as a viable platform. If you could get him to actually
engage in that conversation, I'm sure he would see they are just as valid as
radio, but he's likely not going to, at least not live on his show.
Try to see it from his perspective... he worked SO fucking hard for so many
years just to stay relevant before he really hit the big time. Now all you need
is a crappy mic and a bit of technical skill and you can make a living from home
in your pajamas, something unheard of in Howard's early days. Also, podcasts are
direct competition for him and all of Sirius XM.
Satellite radio was REAL late to the game. The future of broadcasting is of
course the internet. No one is launching a competing satellite radio company and
if Sirius XM expects to survive post-Howard Stern, they will eventually
transition to the internet only and let their satellites burn up in the
atmosphere.
The fact Howard can attract such a gigantic paying audience is much more of a
testament to HIM than the platform and if it weren't for Howard, both Sirius and
XM would have folded by now.
