When I start editing books, which I'm doing now, I like to do quite a
few hundred, put them on my eReaders, then I don't use calibre again
for a few months except for new books by a few favourite authors. I'm
also doing books for other people so I might as well get the best
version in the first place. It's a lot easier now with the retail
versions and with some authors, their entire back catalogue has been
re-issused as eBooks. So once these books are edited I'll only need
to update with new books.
Only 40,000 books? I found this thread whilst on the mobileread forums

Maybe it's just a wind-up but it made me smile. I've got several
hundred thousand books on an external hard drive but I'm never going
to add them to calibre. When the DMCA takedowns started in the TV and
movies groups, I panicked and downloaded all the books in every
newsgroup back to 2008 and have continued downloading all of
pychopaths posts (and BlueDenim's and TreeSavers). They're all on an
external hard drive filed by first name (not in individual author
directories) and it's a useful resource to browse through but I'm
never going to read 99% of them. Too much "adult erotic literature".
I see a series, think it's worth a look and get directed to Fantastic
Fiction for Adults. I know it's a popular genre of book but the
people on IRC need to get out more.
I'm only going to use the calibre library for books I've read and want
to read, so probably not more than a few thousand at most. I always
have a problem deciding what to read next after finishing a series of
books so getting the tags right is going to be important and then I
can browse through the books quickly. I also have quite few books that
aren't part of a series, that I wanted to read and never have because
they get lost in the few hundred books I store on my eReaders. There's
several options for calibre so I can highlight books that would
otherwise get missed.
I've just installed the portable version of calibre on a flash drive.
I'm going to use this version to do a quick edit of a series I come
across and want to try. If I like the books I'll then transfer to my
main library. My problem at the moment is that I'm spending too much
time learning about calibre features and not actually editing any
books.
