Alice Roberts reveals the mind-expanding story of how your enormous brain
evolved. In the final episode, Alice Roberts reveals the mind-expanding story of
how your enormous brain evolved. This is the story of the organ that is the most
defining characteristic of humans; our enormous brains. These are the most
complex organs in nature, performing trillions of calculations every second.
Despite our incredibly close genetic relationship to other apes, our unique
brains give us the ability to think, communicate, plan and cooperate that
underpins our complex culture and unprecedented achievements as a species. They
have enabled us to transcend the basic biological imperatives of survival that
preoccupy other species, and achieve a level of consciousness and self-
knowledge unique in the history of life on Earth. Your very ability to read and
understand these words is an incredibly complex skill that no other species has
ever come close to achieving, and it's all down to that lump of grey matter in
your skull: your amazing brain.
In the final episode, Alice Roberts reveals the mind-expanding story of how our
big brains evolved. Travelling back millions of years, she demonstrates how
changing environments in our ancient African habitat affected an ancestor
called Homo habilis and began the development of our brains. Alice meets our
chimpanzee relatives and discovers the roots of our social behaviour and
learning. Working with both children and other animals, she finds that our
brains are hard wired to imitate, leading to our unique tool innovations and
ability to share knowledge through complex language.
However, in a maternity ward we find that these amazing abilities come at a
cost: Our brains are so big that childbirth has become problematic and we are
effectively born premature and helpless to compensate. At the other end of the
journey of life, Alice meets traditional Hadza tribesmen in Tanzania and
reveals how long-lived grandmothers help their daughters have more babies and,
in turn, expand the human population.
Alice travels to Gibraltar and makes the surprising discovery that one extinct
human species, the Neanderthals, had brains even bigger than our own. We lived
alongside these other humans until about 25,000 years ago, and even interbred
with them. Alice discovers that a combination of our greater cultural
flexibility and sheer luck may have led to their downfall and our survival.
Despite our amazing brains and cumulative cultural achievements, our success
has always rested on a knife edge.
