I started out years ago using CD's, then DVD's for my digital storage,
and would make at least 2 verified copies of everything, which was a
pain, and I have discovered several disks that burned fine and worked
okay, and failed some time after. At least one of the issues turned
out to be disk labels. No idea why, but all of the disk errors were
on disks with labels, so I stopped using them over a decade ago.
I also stopped downloading stuff for about a decade, then got back
into it about 2 years ago. Most of my previous stuff had been music
and a few audio books. It took me years to get around to the books,
but I enjoyed them so much, that's what motivated me to come back and
see what else I could find. This group, documentaries, is probably my
most favorite of all the groups, so I've been getting virtually
everything on Agent's news server for this newsgroup. My preference
for the USB drives is the Western Digital "My Book" products, the 4TB
size is pretty economical, and I make two copies of each item on
separate drives, so odds are, both won't fail at the same time, unless
some giant solar flare wipes all our precious data and maybe us with
it!
The 6TB drives are in stores now, at $180, so I'll start using those
when I need more space. Also, the 1TB drives are just over $50, which
are very handy.
Spike, I thought you were in Canada, but you mention pounds for money,
not that I'm trying to find you out or anything, but just still
lamenting the apparent disappearance of JCBinup who posted all those
wonderful BBC series... I so hope he comes back, or someone else
arises... PBS does show some things from the BBC, but now that I've
tasted so many many, BBC2, BBC4, I think BBC must have a lot more
money than PBS... [rant] not to mention the U.S. Republicans seem to
want to get rid of PBS, along with public education and anything
resembling socialism or liberal values [/rant] ... go figure... they
know not what they do to their own children's future...
I would like to post stuff eventually, but have not had the time to
learn to use all this TOR stuff, or whatever it is, to hide my
identity, and most of what I have came from here, and is probably
still on the server... but I do have some old films on VHS that I need
to digitize and post somewhere, maybe, if anybody might want them,
things not yet released on dvd, like "One Day In The Life Of Ivan
Denesovich", and "Looking For Mr Goodbar", to mention a couple.
Actually, I already did digitize the "One Day..." one, just for my own
archives, since who knows how long my VHS player will continue to
work. None of my floppy drives work any more! Anyhow, so much to do,
so little time...
One thing I have digitized, but would love a better copy, it was a
documentary about termites, "Mysterious Castles of Clay"
