Thank you for the link.
In fact I found very few topics related to my ISP (“Free”, in France),
but I keep it however for further explorations.
To be honest, I can't exclude that the trouble was on my side.
I'm using ADSL (and not cable as I mistakenly wrote before), which is
known to be sensitive to electrical perturbations.
My ISP performed a test from their own installations up to a certain
point near my home (the so-called “DSLAM” I guess, or maybe even
nearer) and said they found no anomaly. However my modem still
exhibited huge numbers of transmission errors (classified as FEC, HEC,
which can be “compensated” or repaired in real-time, but also CRC
errors, the ones that lead to garbage on TV reception [though not
annoying for other internet services]).
That's why they concluded to perturbations on my side.
I sincerely can't tell whether they're right or wrong.
As an example, I discovered something quite unexpected while performing
tests in search of potential interferences.
One day I was unplugging one by one every device in my home, then
rebooted each time the modem to see what happened; after unplugging the
power supply of an old DVD burner from LaCie (which I almost never use,
but that had stayed plugged in for months) the bitrate of my internet
connection almost doubled suddenly! (Though the CRC things didn't
disappear…)
In order to be sure I replugged/unplugged the power supply several
times, and I had the confirmation that this power supply had been
“eating” half of my bitrate for months.
Since then, I can't be sure of anything… ;~(
Another thing: I'm reluctant to move to another ISP since all others,
without exception, encrypt TV programs.
They let you record the shows on their hard drives, and watch them as
many times as you wish *but* these HDs are formatted in a proprietary
manner that prevent users from transferring them to a computer.
On the other hand my ISP encrypts programs only for channels that
stipulate it (mostly commercial and movie channels).
