To do digi work?
In the embroidery industry - per se - output machines are dedicated
workstations. They do nothing else but digitise and feed sewing
machines.
Have a look at what your local tailor shop is using as a GUI.
Bet you a yankee dollar it is Windows 98se or a Unix platform.
Another factor is the reality digitising software writers are employed
to write for industry change, not MS 'upgrades'.
The 'old' software works so why change it?
Also...
Programmers are not at all interested in this group or "cottage industry
digitisers". What is out there is all you get. It is up to you to adapt to that
supply.

Use it for word processing, about all it is good for.
Oh.. and "Internet Banking" <giggle>

Even XP (in compatibility mode) has problems running established
digitising software.

Surprise surprise!
Time to buy another computer that works.

Impossible.
Any "stuff it in" exercise/process, in getting drivers to behave, is
a hike of frustration, no matter the platform.
There is no "off the shelf" solution.. even for simple functions.
I have a computer here, brand spanking new components as at
Xmas 2008 that has no sound driver compatible with both the
surround sound chip and the CPU.. the board manufacturer is
"working on it".. has been for 8 months!

All digitising software is excessively priced to fit a commercial
market. The professional tools will run on Vista, IF:
a.) you pay for them
b.) you are savvy enough to deal direct with the writers in getting
the version to work on the machine you purchased.
One solution that works?
Do as lookin4wendi <havenone@nowhere.com> suggests.
By a computer with lots of RAM and CPU speed that is
backwards compatible with Win98se. Load Wilcom 8 to it
(available in this group) and forget "family computer" or
"one size fits all".

Good Luck.
