Thank You -You are correct in your caution.
To answer your question, one should follow the general thumb-rules of
anonymity.
I am not a boffin either, but have found my way around.
The News server and News reader providers are all firmly committed to
confidentiality and generally state that publicly on their web sites. You
may find some help there, on their FAQ's or send them your question and I
am sure they will help.
They will fight any attempts to breach this confidentiality right to the
courts, it is so important to them.
The day one of them breaks that they will lose an immense amount of
business, so they dare not.
Firstly your news reader program (whichever you use) should have an
anonymous "identity" setup, whereby you can use a pseudonym with a false or
non-existent e-mail. Using this, any posting you make leads to them and ends
there, as the posting is sent by them. You will need to go into your Options
or Configuration section and create one. Once you have done that I suggest
you choose a different newsgroup to send a test message with a small
innocent attachment like a font file or something to test it out. Send it,
and download it when it appears. See what comes up and that it has no links
or trail back to you.
If I have lost you already, I apologise but you will need someone to assist
you there. Hopefully you have such a person to call on.
If you manage to do this, change your name and address from the one you are
currently using so that nobody knows it is the same person who is
corresponding with me now.
There are further ways to protect yourself and confuse the trail, leading
anyone completely in the wrong direction even to the wrong country of
origin. but this is something not to be made public here.
Never ever use your name, e-mail address or use any reference that can be
traced back to you.
Thus, never answer or be lured into corresponding to a request to a private
address - that can be traced to you directly - unless of course it is
someone you know, trust or have corresponded with for some time.
Rule of thumb - DO NOT BE TEMPTED.
